I knew I'd read somewhere that you could use the multi-player tower view in FSX outside of multi-player, so you could view your AI, and I did think about this for last month's screenshot comp, but didn't get around to it...
Today I re-activated FTX AI, and found the instructions there. Basically, you create a hosted multi-player Air Traffic Controller session, save the flight, leave multi-player then load the saved flight as a free-flight.
Not much AI around Auckland with FTX, but it's quite an interesting exercise -- the radar is fully working, so you can see exactly where everyone is.

Thanks for the idea. Loading up now....does that show your NZAA Airport in those shots?

How did you save it?

Thanks Robin - this is great. Much better than the control tower that comes with TrafficX. This is quite surreal - i've got my 32" monitor running this, looking out the 'window' in 2D view and can see and hear the raindrops... (which is 'real world' weather according to REX2... Cheers.

You save the flight on the location selection screen (don't actually start the session)

Fantastic mate! You've just made my simming experience so much more interesting notworthy.gif .

I used to have to set up a free flight and position my plane where I wanted it and watch traffic that way. Not any more!

I gave it a go from NZAA but wasn't very busy. Gave it a go at YSSY and it was brilliant. Spent over an hour watching the movements there. There were so many 747s and 2 runways were active. Wanted to try somewhere busier, so went to KLAX... pity the buildings got in the way there.

This is not an addon, it is built into FSX. Normally this would be part of a multi-player session, where you can take the role of ATC, but normally you won't see AI, you'll just see other players. This is a way of getting the ATC experience and still see the AI. There are details on the FSInsider site.

I take part of the responsibility for 'Whenpuapai' -- I thought I'd submitted a bug during the FSX beta, but I can't find any record of it now:)

Thanks for that, Rob ... I gave it a go. Very absorbing!!!

I wonder if whoever takes on FS [is it Aerosoft??] in the future will be able to use these "hooks" and develop a full-blown ATC simulator/controller - either built in or as an add-on.
