Finally got a chance to get back amongst it all, trying out a bit of Polish scenery first up in the Redbull L-13 Blanik. Then it was off on a lazy 500km ridge soaring session in the Alps with a Discus 2B...

I've got CumulusX, but FSX actually does pretty well on its own as far as thermals are concerned - The best tool so far is SimProbeX, which performs a real-time scan of the mesh you are flying over and relates it to the local wind data to generate ridge lift.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Being a real-world paraglider pilot, I like the extra tweaking that can be done to enhance FSX. I have version 1.8 which incorporates SimProbeX. I haven't had too much time to play with it thus far unfortunately!
