Perth to Jakarta

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

I fairly long gap since my last leg of my trip to who knows where. I was able to use the Boeing 767 (my prize from last months competition) for this longish leg of 3002km. An uneventful take off at dawn marked the start of this flight. Had trouble with the slightly different version of the autopilot so returned to Perth shortl;y after take off to give me chance for a coffee and another quick read of the manual - found the master switch location so it was off again into the early dawn sky with my coffee mug at my right hand.

The sun eventually appeared as I popped out above the cloud cover

Flying above thin stratus cloud most of the way with clear skies above but only intermittent glimpses of the west coast of Australia.

The first half of the journey was marked by abrupt and violent changes in wind direction. I'm sure that the passengers were making good use of their barf bags back behind us. Our condensation trails appeared to zig zag back and forth. Not sure what the cause of this was as I never experiences such frequent and violent changes in wind direction and speed before.

Approaching Indonesia, visibility dropped dramatically and as we lost height it became impossible to use any visual references so it was instrument flying for the last 110km, until the ground appeared below us at 2000 ft. Even then the visibility was only around 5-8km so it was a relief to finally see the runway appear ahead of us.

Touched down about halfway along the runway, turning at the end to park up at the terminal and allow the passengers to disembark. I started this flight a bit late at night so wasn't able to get to bed until 1.30am for a much need sleep. Must remember to work out in advance how long these legs are going to take me!! Still it's great fun, even though my wife and friends think I'm a little eccentric with this interest!

Don't be afraid to press 'R' and '+' to speed up the simulation in the uneventful bits! thumbup1.gif

This is the Justflight 767, isn't it? Nice VC!

Are you using REX? I often find with my REX+Real Weather I get wind directions swinging round almost 180 degrees. Something wrong there, Shirley?

Yes, the JustFlight 767, it's really beginning to grow on me . .. .

I'm using Active Sky X with real weather, maybe there is a similar sort of fault/feature as with REX.

Yes I did consider that and also thought about saving the flight and coming back to it the next day but somehow couldn't bring myself to do it! If those airline pilots can do it then so can I, especially when I can wander off for a snack, coffee and even do a bit of reading.

Maybe it's my masochistic tendencies coming to the fore again . . .

It's probably the default. I did look into some scenery for Jakarta but don't think I actually got around to installing it!

GPS - I use it around NZ so if it's good enough for my car it's good enough for my virtual flights! Of course I do have my trusty atlas open beside me as well to check spot heights and shapes of major features like coastlines and lakes.

OK, I'm not a purist fly by the seat of my pants type but got a bit over the compass and map stuff during my orienteering days. Good fun but not when it's critical....

That's just something the MSFS has never dealt with well... In your FSUIPC options, there's a box to tick to smooth those fluctuations out. If you're high and slow, eg: a U2, you can go from a normal cruise to overspeed and back into stall condition quite easily with those shifts.

Nice screens Scaber - no doubt you'll be instructing on the '76 by the time you make it back to NZ smile.gif

I use those settings in FSUIPC but it doesn't make any difference. It does smooth them out a bit, but it's the occasional weird 180 degree shifts that are wrong to start with, I think.

:-) I'm finding it particularly interesting locating and landing at different airports, especially when they aren't in sight due to poor visibiity of night conditions. Thanks for your continuing interest. smile.gif

Don't ya love FS! tongue.gif

@Greg, Very nice screens! It can be very difficult when documenting a trip, to make each screen a little different and not get repetitive. You've made every screen unique by using different angles, lighting, etc. thumbup1.gif
