Unfortunately, yes; that is true. If you fly in the vicinity of the 3 main centers you're catered for; hit the South Island back blocks (Fiordland/Mt. Cook or Mt. Aspiring NPs et cetera) and you get ... Christchurch weather. Doh!!!
Of course, you can get local hourly NZ SYNOPs from weather-forcast.com (and they're extremely abbreviated, at that) or try VATNZ-VATSIM New Zealand (weather) (just as abbreviated). There used to be an app made by greaneyr, but the METAR link he supplied is no longer current.
If you hold your PPL you can, of course, log into the CAA and obtain local METARs, but even that has gone the way of "user-pays".
