An apocryphal tale:
Roadmarking a new road, the painting machine painted the yellow line straight over the top of a tortoise, slowly making its way across.
The tortoise survived, albeit with some added decoration.
The annual roadmarking contractor came long 3 years later and found a gap in the yellow line, assumed it was meant to be a gap, and painted a gap.
The gap persists to this day...
COBRA BALL RC135s carried infrared sensors on starboard, to track ICBM launches.
They painted the wing black to cut glare on the cameras.
The equipment is long gone, along with the need for the paint, but unit pride dictates they remain in that livery!
(Thank you Wiki)
What I don't always see: the KC135 is meant to have a smaller fuselage diameter than the 707 variants.
Yet they always look to me as if they are fatter, and bursting out of their skin!
