Bonus: The An-2 specifically pictured here is apparently based at Wanaka.

It's in the Transport and Toy Museum

Nice Sean, watched this one fly a Wanaka .. the 1996 after that show it was pretty mothballed into the Museum.

It is steel , and rotting .... alongside the poor old Auster , slowly getting destroyed by the birds ..... and the loadstar , outside (last time i saw it) in much the same condition ... sad.

Sad alright, all of their aircraft need TLC including Wal's.

Think like most Museums, they run on donation .. you don't get many stop at the Wanaka unless an airshow going , then only there to see the airshow ... good to have but lack experience engineer staff would be the killer.

Thanks for all of the interest. Hopefully something can be done with the An-2 over there (and the other aircraft) to prevent them from rotting to the point of being unrecoverable.

While flying both, I did find it interesting to note just how similar in performance they were. I'd throw the A2A Cessna 172 into that performance mix as well. I think the biggest differences between the Islander and Colt at least are the following:

1. You have to be at least three vodka shots in prior to flying the An-2.
2. If you can hear anything other than the engines in the BN-2, you're doing it wrong. You should gradually hear nothing at all, especially after a long flight due to hearing loss.
3. The An-2's engine does not like warm weather. It's much more temperamental than the BN-2, which is pretty much a flip the starter and go sort of ordeal (even in the real thing).

The 92 , 94 , 96 and 98 Wanaka Warbirds were the best except 2004, I flew into the show on the day .. best part I flew back from Wanaka to Wigram in the jump seat in the DC-3, watching that AN-2 , the memories ... thinking about it the first 1988 was so changed there was no transport museum were now the the Colt is stored.
