Funny that you mentioned that, as my original goal was a cruising altitude of 7000 feet, but the Heron was having none of that, and I had to settle for 5000. Having not flown this aircraft extensively prior to when this flight occured, I didn't have a good understanding of the performance of this aircraft. I'd say it's somewhere between the Aerosoft Catalina and the Flight1 Islander in performance...meaning it's not exactly a speed demon or a high flier.
The Braathens S.A.F.E. livery pictured was real, and these aircraft served extensively on domestic routes in Norway in the 1950s, prior to being replaced by Fokker F-27s.
The other interesting thing is the airline kept the SAFE acronym for decades, even though the whole notion of their name (international routes to South America and the Far East) fell apart in the 1950s and they became mostly a domestic line.
