What beast the Hustler was....was reading the other day about RAAF F-104s (they actually ordered them and then cancelled) before getting Mirages and getting NA Vigilantes before F-111s

We must have been on the same page .... the Ozzy's even looked at the Hustler .
"Convair actively sought to sell the aircraft abroad in the late 1950's in a light-weight stripped out version. The cost of these aircraft was prohibitive and none were sold. The Australian Government showed a fleeting interest but the project was dropped. "

They were also keen on the TSR2 at one stage ...now that is one aircraft I would have love to have seen in service.

Apart from moving its wings, the TSR2 could do everything the F-111 could, and did most of it better. Sadly, Oz was all the way with LBJ, and the UK still had a huge Lease-Lend debt to the US, so the British aviation industry was destroyed.

TRS2 s F-111s VIGILANTES MIRAGE and a B-58s cool.gif , you have a read what the RNZAF was looking at pre buying the A-4s, this from Don Simms and Nick Lee Frampton's book SKYHAWK .

Strangely the RAF F-111s, known as 'K's even got two in the build stage when cancelled cancelled March 20 1968 then disassembled and bits and pieces used for testing on other 111 types and other parts scraped. rolleyes.gif

That the F-111 was the personal favorite of then Secretary of Defense MacNamara in whatever the competition was, makes me feel somehow cheated.
