Thanks guys

Quite happy to discuss defence matters...in truth I think to play with the big boys now in the fast jet arena would mean F-35s ..which even much wealthier countries are struggling to afford. Maybe some high powered jet trainers will suffice if we want to least keep some experience in the fast jet game...like KAI TA-50s (ge404 powered with APG66s radar etc.)..yes I know I said JAS-39s in another thread

Whilst in no way a big fan of her I remember Helen Clark saying in disbandment of the fast jet sqns that we should do better in less areas and that we have to be a niche player instead spreading ourselves thinly over a number of areas. This will certainly be true if we get C-17s (a very impressive machine by any Air Forces standard) and can be also said about the NH-90s (which aren't the cheapest choppers around)...plus we still have P-3s..an area which the RAF and the Dutch have given up on but makes sense for us as a maritime nation. So an air force equipped with NH-90s, C-17s and P-3s (and P-8s hopefully) ..not forgetting the new T-6s we can certainly be proud of, even if it misses a fast jet element.
