My home town...

I spent a big part of my childhood just about smack in the middle of this screenshot, we lived opposite the carpark, on Marine Parade in New Brighton. We just about lived on the beach for much of the year, the sandhills were a marvelous adventure playground, and when it was warm enough we'd swim all day long. I went to Central New Brighton School, Dux 1969:)
Before we were married, my wife and I rented a little cottage in just about the same location, opposite the car park.
This shows the 'new' pier (the model is unfinished at the moment), but I can remember the old wooden pier -- it was too dilapidated to walk on, and finally demolished when I was 9. Back then, in the 60s, New Brighton was the only place which allowed Saturday shopping, so it was a thriving suburb. It was certainly a vibrant place to be on a Saturday, but when Saturday shopping was allowed elsewhere, New Brighton really suffered. It never recovered, and was hard-hit by the earthquakes. I visited it last November, and it was a real emotional experience, seeing it mostly abandoned and run-down.

So setting the date to 1969 will display the old wooden pier!
Go on, you know you want to...

First, Charl, I don't want anyone poking around the New Brighton of my 13-year-old self, that would just be embarrassing.... So if you set your sim to 1969, it will self-destruct.

Aharon -- this is Prepar3d v4, although there will be a FSX version of Christchurch/NZCH.

Paul -- the real Brighton Pier is what we always wanted, I suspect, but ours is just a battleground between those who just like to walk it for the view, and those who fish and spill guts all over the place. I can sympathise with both groups. The only concession is that it is connected to the public library, which has a reasonable restaurant/cafe/bar called 'Salt on the Pier'. Ok coffee, not sure about the food.

The only landmark which has survived from my childhood is the clock tower, which I plan to include in the scenery simply for nostalgia's sake. It was built in 1934, and sometimes it even tells the correct time.
