NZ Wreckology 101
The coasts of NZ have seen many shipwrecks over the last 200 years and some can still be seen like the GSS Stella in North Port Chalky Inlet. Stella served for many years in various jobs including delivering MPs to Parliament, assisting in lighthouse construction and patrolling the offshore islands for stranded seafarers.

Like Stella, other ships like these at Quail Island were simply left after passing their "use by" dates

Ships that were not so lucky and wound up broken are far more frequent but hard to see because they are underwater. In this photo there are four wrecks none of which can be seen because of the conditions but a check on the current Google Maps will show one if you look carefully.

Apart from diving the easiest way to see some wrecks is to take a spade and dig. One wreck, the Hydrabad went ashore at Waitarere and I have photos of her standing proud on the beach. She is now completely buried in sand dunes and without the large marker pole that has been erected you would not know she was there
