Queenstown Airport (NZQN) - Milford Sound (NZMF)

A typical case of does not do this in reality... It was supposed to be a comfortable VFR flight in an oldtimer and almost ended badly. Actually it was too cloudy and the cloud base around the mountains was too low to feel safe. The choice of the plane was not clever either. You could have chosen a plane with the GTN 65ß/750 or one with Garmin GS 1000 and synthetic Vision. Well of course I was way too high above Milford Sound, so I flew out to sea and turned and flew into the fjord. The landing fit so far. But none of this was really elegant.

Nice shots and flight. I'm having difficulty working out what the settlement is in your photo 10. Any ideas?

I think you're right. It is Te Anau and Manapouri. I wrongly assumed it was roughly a direct flight from NZQN to NZMF and the only township on the way would have been Glenorchy. This flight was a good tiki tour down south before heading north to NZMF.

Hasegawa, here's a tourist flight from NZQN to NZMF you may be interested in.

Bruce, the video is really great. The landing was especially interesting for me. It is remarkable how the pilot turns with the B. N. Islander and lands on RWY 29...

The exciting thing about New Zealand for me is that the two islands are completely different and that you can visit such different landscapes in a very short time.

Clouds between you and the ground is always chancy - something I learned long before waypoints and all that jazz. Colored airways between four course LFR's were the menu back then - seemed to work. Nice set of shots though and I got the 170 also.

The weather. . . . Honestly, I always find it exciting to be confronted with dynamic weather and have the appropriate knob in the settings always on the right. I prefer to restrict the graphics elsewhere . . . but not in the weather. Airplanes with spur wheel chassis are always interesting to me. Now that there are good models of the Cessna 170 and also the small Cessna 140, I fly them more often than the more modern patterns.
