The ball bearing run was the nickname of the flights between Leuchars in Scotland and Stockholm in neutral Sweden between 1939 and 1945. Once they became available, unarmed but very fast Mosquito's were used for these flights. From 1941, they were operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force in aircraft with covilian registrations and BOAC call signs, with the pilots carrying fake papers stating they were BOAC pilots. Apart from diplomatic mail, the service also carried passengers (Niels Bohr among other) and SKF ball bearings, which were vital for the allied war effort, hence the name...
