I don't normally reply to my own posts, but I've been thinking...I wonder if NZDEF ever considered the Harrier as an option? given our terrain and mindset, it would have been ideal.
I suppose, looking forward ...back then, there may not have been a viable replacement option.
Is anyone still using these? I'm pretty sure India, Thailand, and Spain have long since replaced them.

The RNZAF scheme is similar to the Kahu Skyhawks. I think that enough hides down in the Mackenzie Country would have been enough for us to use them.
Just my opinion.

I believe the Royal Thai Navy still use them. The Indian Navy used SHARS with The White Tigers Squadron...I may be wrong.
The Spanish Navy called theirs Matadors...not sure if they're still using them.

Beautiful shots Marty - are the upper surfaces a bit wrinkled? in the other thread it would seem so!
I do not believe there would be a NZ theatre appropriate to the Jumpjet, it was rather focussed on the Cold War forward dispersal role to buy a little time for the main force.
Is there still one in the Ashburton museum?

The Thais haven't used Harriers for years. The Italian and Spanish Navy's use Advanced Harriers, although the Italians are replacing theirs with F-35Bs
