Pending release of TrueTreesNZ

Postby Kelvinr » Sat Jan 30, 2021 1:55 pm

Here's some screenshots of the work i've been doing to make New Zealand more accurate with it's vegetation.

What's been done?

LOD has been adjusted to strike a balance between low and slow and high flying and because more species of trees have been used performance was a consideration.

Materials have been matched to real trees in terms of visual representation. This means the shape, colour, and height have been modified for all species used in the following Biomes:

Northland temperate kauri forests
North Island temperate forests
Southland temperate forests
Nelson Coast temperate forests
Richmond temperate forests
Fiordland temperate forests
Westland temperate forests
Canterbury-Otago tussock grasslands
Rakiura Island temperate forests
Chatham Island temperate forests
Kermadec Islands subtropical moist forests
New Zealand South Island montane grasslands

Limitations:
Due to the lack of functionality on where to put tall vs short trees you may find some taller trees where they shouldn't be but they are based on real heights so this can't be helped until new functionality arrives.
Due to limited materials some trees may not look exactly as in the real world but should look close enough for a better experience until more functionality comes along.

There will obviously be some work to do but this is a huge step in making New Zealand great again in the sim :)

Here's some images, I'll try to get some comparative shots. I'm keen to get feedback :)

Here's some more screenshots after some more tweaking..

EDIT: note that you may need to turn down your tree settings, you will see now that the slider actually does something. Even if you set to low, you will still get a nice surrounding of trees just not too far into the distance but ok if you are low and slow.

Good idea.
It shows once again that the databases are nice to be on site something different.

That looks really nice, Kelvin. It would be great eventually to have some specific NZ tree models, similar to what Orbx did for Orbx NZ. Great to see some more realistic representation of NZ, but I'd kill for some eucalyptus and willows:)

Latest version is available on Flightsim.to
V1.2.0 it corrects some texture issues and cleaned up some areas to look more realistic.

I'd recommend going for a flight around Auckland :)

Donations welcome but not obligatory.
