A loong ramble around the Albatross

Still getting to grips with the Albatross: the model is well detailed, inside and out.

Image

Spun off from the HU-16 Catalina replacement, the G-111 was extensively reworked by Chalk's International Airlines for civilian use.
That airline had amongst other things, run moonshine during prohibition.

Image

It’s quite civilised, and quite versatile, our journey going from water on Lake Wanaka to dry land at Queenstown

Image

The model has one of the best wake/spray effects I’ve seen in a sim, very dynamic.

Image

So absorbed in the scenery was I, that we arrived a few thousand feet high.
You can just make out the runway through the windscreen.
The reworked structure must’ve been really strong, the floats didn’t budge under a 3,600fpm sideslip.

Image

The landing gear is surprisingly strong too, despite looking rather gangly.
On the ramp you see how large the Albatross is, compared to say, an Islander.

Memories of Warbirds Over Wanaka 1996 with that Cat and Albatross combo!

It looks gorgeous and I'm very tempted. How's the sound package? The Albatross makes quite a (lovely) racket in real life.

Sound is "Generic" Radial which doesn't sound too much like your visitor
Interesting bit of trivia I found, and never knew about: the Wright Cyclone powering this and many other aircraft also found its way into the WW2 Sherman tank!

Thank you for your perseverance, Marty. :)

The Chalk's repaint that Jan Kees did shows up on the HU 16 model, but I suspect it belongs on the G 111 (with the civvie cabin)

I did for the HU-16 on purpose, as that gave it the nosebubble which the real aircraft had as well.

Nice shots!

A very nice series of snaps. It was an Albatross that was used in the movie series " The Expendables" from memory.
That would be a good paint project JK.

Thanks gents, CP yes one can easily extend Silvester Stallone's script into the sim :D

Mmm JK the bubble is actually painted over in white on the Chalk's plane.
Wonder if one could transplant the interior from the G-111?
