Hi all,

My last uploaded images were of Auckland using fsearthtiles at 1metre per pixel. Now I have put on my mouth guard to painstakingly download even higher resolution for Auckland at 0.5m per pixel. This appears to be the maximum resolution available from Google. Anyway will post some pics here soon.

I wonder why people aren't releasing their "kmz" and then everyone would have the same kind (except for touched up), and then just a place where you can go download the autogen.

Very simplistic, but it's not that hard to convert it into a scenery file (I just can't get it to look good.)

Very cool, but no, there are a few reasons why it's impractical to put software like this on Avsim or similar sites.
  • The Google Earth EULA specifically prohibits sharing aerial photography derived from Google Earth/Maps, this is also a reason as to why Avsim would not be very keen to host this. (Please, please have a read around, people like Robin, Mike and Tim have put up some very good posts - use the forum search...)
  • The size of the files are very large; even with high-speed broadband it would be very impractical for the user (think: long time to download, might blow out your data cap), and more so for the hoster, in that it would increase the bandwidth they use exponentially. winkyy.gif

As Alex pointed out, this is not quite as simple as 'someone' deciding that this is now ok. This particular image belongs to the Auckland International Airport Ltd, so you would need to have their permission to distribute it. ALL Google Earth imagery belongs to someone, and it ain't Google, so if there's something there you want, you just need to find out who it belongs to and negotiate with them. (When you zoom in on an area in Google Earth, the screen will normally show who owns the copyright.)

I've been doing some research on the new Geoeye satellite, which is partly funded by Google, but even then Google simply license the imagery, they don't own it. In fact you can purchase Geoeye imagery, through one of their 'channel partners', I have no idea of the cost, but I would think that it wouldn't be cheap:)

The file size issue could be solved, but I don't think you could use the existing file libraries -- Avsim limits files to 100MB, I think that Flightsim.com has a higher limit, but not by much.

Yeah, I thought this thread might create some 'meaningful conversation'. All I am doing is really showing people what can be reached with FSX, and, i'm sure that people would like to see this kind of detail to the FSX world. I just love creating something that no body (at least that I know) has done due to many reasons; one being the shear file size of the data. Just to give you an idea, currently I have about 8gb of 0.5m p/pixel data which spans from west auckland to silverdale/orewa. Anyways I am just downloading a bit more data and creating watermasks to make it look the part so will have some images here very soon!

As promised... I must admit I could have spent more time with these shots but as you may be aware they are 0.5metres per pixel and took a considerable amount of time to download and compile. The area of Auckland has consumed about nearly 20gb of data. That's only talking about Auckland and a little bit up north. It's never ending. Happy viewing I will post more when I have overcome my RSI from editing the pics.
