Not a likely scenario but had some fun blasting around in this Capt Sim Mig over Marlborough - Woodbourne seems ideal for this type of activity :

Never really worked out the Mig's systems as the manual is not that good and everything is Russian in the cockpit

Woodbourne's runway is just long enough

1900D Intercept

Low level pass & zoom climb over Omaka - a complete contrast to the resident ww1 a/c

Now this is the trickey part - landing - after many attempts & months trying I have mastered it - land just at the right speed (300 km/h) - too slow and you will rapidly sink into the ground.

I love the shape of the Mig, it's a mix of utility and minimalism, a bit like a shark. They certainly didn't put any poofy frills into it.
EDIT: I normally can't bear to look at one of my sceneries for a while after its finished, but you've done just a brilliant job in these shots I'll make an exception:)

Sharp shooting Naki- I wasn't even aware Captain Sim produced a Mig 21! I just love its nose cone, reminds me of the English Electic Lightning.

I seem to be seeing an awefull lot of Russian craft around latley, with all the TU-95's in the news ninja.gif

Thanks Robin, Alex and Trolly.

Haha poofy frills laugh.gif - I had a good look at the real one when it was at Ardmore - it certainly looked very solid and able fly through the proverbial brick wall without any problems.

Trolly - Its quite an old design - dates back to FS 2002 but still more than acceptable nowadays - VC is just a bit fuzzy but otherwise rather nice.

Mmm would be kinda interesting...
You guys kicked off a nice train of thought - the Fishbed was the most prolific jet fighter ever produced, and it was damn fast, Mach 2.
Paul, does the sim manage to model that?
Also, it remains a most potent weapons platform 50 years on, there are still many in front line service.
With avionics refits and modern missiles these would give an F-16 driver a fright, never mind a poor old Starfighter!

Man of your skills...jump into Steve's Anniversary Falcon repaint , load up the F-16 Cross flight, see if you can intercept and formate with them before they cross NZOH!
We'll need a screenshot...

Nice shots that Mig21 reminds me of the one I sat in at Pokeno once BTW in Aussie there is a 2nd Mig21 that is airworthy and is flown by ex RAAF pilots. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw one flying over here.

Actually I am not sure whether the sim model will do Mach 2. I'll have to take it to altitude and see - I have certainly had it over Mach 1. Edit - I can confirm it will go Mach 2 - in clean configuration I got it up to well over Mach 2 and off the dial and up to 100,000 ft which is as far as you can go in FS 9 - seems over optimistic perhaps

Yep there are still a lot of 21s out there - probably the most modern in terms of avionics are the ones operated by Romania which has modern Israeli avionics in them. I think India have the most in service nowadays with several hundred. One limiting factor with the Mig 21 is the lack of a decent combat radius.

I have heard the F-104 is even harder to land than the Mig which must make near impossible! I reckon the 21 wil out turn the F-104 - the F-104 looks like it only goes in straight line (hence the nickname missle with a man in it) biggrin.gif

I think the one in Pokeno is now in Chch which Ian alludes to. I have heard the one in Aussie is not flown anymore due to high maintenance and general running costs but I might be wrong - yes I thought we mighht see one fly here too - maybe one day.
