John Paul College

You can see lots of aviation activity from the field and the classrooms. Hence the Herc spotting and seeing all the private jets and stuff (as well as NZ and QF arrivals at ROT). Plus an Otter flies over the field on a regular basis (like pretty much everyday).

Oh yeap, about the Otter, could you elaborate on that? I've never seen an Otter around Rotorua, (maybe you mean an aircraft similar to the Twin Otter, like the Britten Norman Islander that hangs around or something...)... :)

Alex

Edit: Duh, VAC, the VAS Otter, sorry; was having a 'stupid' moment there.

And, whilst we're talking about the Otter; do one of you guys know how they get it (+ EFI and FEO) onto the float-rack type things by the VAS hangar? I've been thinking and can't quite figure out how they'd do it...

Haha, yer it's the VAS Otter (don't think it's VAC though, if the CAA is correct, VAC is a Dash 8 belonging to Vincent).
I've also seen VAS's Cessna (at least I think it was ZK-FPO) over school too, and various other light aircraft similar to that.

And there's always helicopters above school - all the time (above my house too thumbup1.gif) and the occassional landing on the field is pretty great too!
I think it may have been an Iriqouis that we had land on the field recently, but I can't remember (it was last year, I can barely remember what happened 7 seconds ago).
I'll try and find some pictures/a picture actually and post them/it.

Catholic schools for the win - build 'em right underneath aircraft! plane.gif

I don't know how they get it onto the float-racks. Daniel might though (one of the best most knowledgeable friends I've got thumbup1.gif).

laugh.gif regarding 'stupid' moments, I have them on a regular basis.

Edit: It appears this thread has turned into a bit of a general Rotorua aviation thread... biggrin.gif

Cheers,
Anthony Harris

Herc was back again today during period three Maths, which is 11.15 am - 12.15pm. Not there for the whole time though, just a part of it.
It was doing more circuits and flew pretty much overhead a couple of times.

Cheers

They came in nice and low over the eastern suburbs, from my guess would be around 200-300ft over Lynmore/Owhata.
The thread title just keeps on being relevant.

Thanks for the answer about the floatplanes as well Daniel, I've always wondered about that.

More general Rotorua aviation stuff:

The heli (Iriquois I think) for the Searchlight Tattoo thing tonight and tomorrow night was flying around my house for a while before, it got pretty low a couple times.

Once it go so low the cat decided she'd best take cover

Yea, I saw/heard the Iriquois as well. I thought the Red Checkers were supposed to be performing at the Tattoo as well; I suppose the weather put a stop to them...

Hey Guys,

Yer the Iroquois has been flying round foir this Searchlight Tattoo.
I was trying to get a picture or two but it was to far away. :(
They really are noisy helicopters.
I might head out to the Rotorua Airport tomorrow and see if i can get pics (i presume it will stay there overnight)

Cheers
Daniel Firth :plane:

Bugger. It was so low and so close to my house I probably could have gotten a decent picture.
Why didn't i think of the camera!!! <_<

They are pretty noisy.

I imagine it will stay overnight, no point in it going elsewhere for one night just to come back tomorrow.

Cheers

It was pretty miserable today
Enjoy!

Nice shots; although you could have picked a better day. It was absolutely nasty; squally-type showers, gusty wind, mostly dropping visibility etc...

Yer thanks for posting the pics.

The weather on Sunday was terrible. It rained during the searchlight tattoo as well (the best bit of which was easily the Iroquois!).
Not that he had much chance to pick a different day - it was here for two days and I imagine gone again.

What VAC said about his Dad made me think that it's a fairly small world, and it's nice to be in this "community" and kind of know each other.

Good point about the Herc too

Cheers

Yep he was flying with Henry I think- Tongan guy. They're both Captains so they take turns.
