Makara Wind turbines

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby 2fst4u » Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:36 pm

I thought it might be a good idea to start placing the new Makara wind turbines (to the west of wellignton city) in FSX. I have ALL the locations of the turbines (not incredibly accurate but pretty darn close) but I am in no position to give GMAX (or any modelling) a go (tried it, sucked at it, would prefer not to try again). Would anybody be interested in giving the models a try? Animated models would be great if possible. I would need to find some specs for you and a mention in a readme would be entirley ensured without question.

The new wind turbines have started going up but I havent had a chance to see them from the sky yet. Pretty imposing structures, they can bee seen all the way from Mt Victoria lookout over the horizon!

EDIT: oh, and a little guidance on how to get someone elses model, onto my computer, into a BGL file (i know how to use object placment tool), then onto the internetz would be good too. I am a beginner after all. biggrin.gif

yea, i was thinking about this also.

@NZ255:

thats not THE map, but i had a similar one, overlayed it in google earth and made placemarks, then took the co-ordinates. and yes,

67 metres from base to top-of-tower
7.7 metres from back of nacelle (box on top) to nosecone point
40 metre long blades.

thanks heaps for offering

FSX comes with wind turbine models. That should make it easy smile.gif

Just read through the SDK to get the GUID.

I know. but they are an unusual grey colour and they arent animated. They just dont look right. As I said, I hate to be picky but this is going to be built to fit with RealNZ wellington which looks much better with proper models.

It's kind of hard to get the scale right too. Basically im going REALLY realistic with this.

Well being realistic and I am not sure of NZ Flight Regulations but here in Tasmania your not permitted to fly within 3000 feet of them so you don't even get close enough to even see them with any detail at all.

lol i understand what you're saying but this is flight sim and occasionally people like to do stupid things (ie flying within metres of objects).
you can still tell even from a distance. especially on my 22 inch widescreen lcd.

Hey, will be a few more days. I'm looking at making the top of the turbin rotate depending on the wind direction. I assume it will point in the direction of the wind?

That's fine. Take your time. Brilliance take patience tongue.gif yea rotating houing would be sweet. Give it a go 'cause that would be pretty mint. Would varying turbine speed according to wind speed be too much to ask? one would think it would require the same data... if it is too much to ask then dont worry about it

into wind would be correct (im fairly certain they are electronially pointed into the wind according to data gathered by the onboard equipment, as opposed to 'blowing' into the wind)

thanks heaps, again

Yeah, I'm trying to find out about varying speed with wind speed as well but we'll have to see about that biggrin.gif

OK cool, pointed to the wind as in:

I think the big ones used to have the prop downwind (I think the wind orients them naturally when they're like this) but nowadays they're upwind and a computer makes sure they're pointed into the wind.
