Introduction of „The Owl’s Nest“ web site

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Charl » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:55 am

Yes "Various" sounds like the best bet - there are actually 2 packages, the first one (listed above) might be of more general interest.

Great resource, I even found links to those amazing SBAI creations!
Your site is bookmarked for much future browsing, well done.

Next step might be a GE kmz clickable file if you intend covering everything in the whole world.

I am not sure that I understand what you mean by this, Charl. Something like the "AI World Map" (it is in the same menu like the "Other AI Aircraft" page)? --> click.

And thank you, Adamski. I love your avatar cool.gif

Yes I did something similar
At flightsim.com:
Name: nzfs9f.zip
Size: 93,295 Date: 03-30-2011
FS2004 Google Earth Scenery Database for New Zealand - Final.
This is a .kmz file showing most of the FS2004 sceneries available for NZ (75 or so).
Just double-click on the file and they should show up in Google Earth.
Airports are categorised, so you can accurately filter by airport type.
Download links are provided for each, as well as a link to a screen shot.

Yours is much prettier, though limited to MAIW.
I assume you could relatively easily add in a link to your aircraft database from each country?

The one I have is an absolute pain to maintain, therefore I am working sine some time on a replacement with much better display options and - hopefully - an easier data interface. But that is most likely still some time in the future.

Martin

Here is a preview of the coming replacement of the world map. No aircraft yet, but still very educational...

Very nice, I always wondered what the flag of Belize looked like...
This is a powerful tool, look forward to it being populated!

click --> Still a preview but already loaded with all MAIW and individual packages. If somebody misses the South African Gripens... I have misplaced them to South Korea smile.gif
Still needs some tweaking.

1. Is this a useful concept? Are there people who prefer this to a textual approach?
2. Is the performance good enough?
Cheers,
Martin

I think it is going to get too busy if you put everything in the graphical interface...
How about category links only on the map?
Perhaps a link to complete packages, like MAIW, another to individual aircraft and updates?
That way you can use the filters which become really powerful for bigger datasets.
Think how you'd use it:
Go to a country, get the package you want.
Oh, there's no xxx plane.
Go back to the map and see if there are any individual planes on offer, click through to list.
Filter. Install.

And, the RNZAF has 2 packages at flightsim!
The first is the complete Air Force complement:
FS2004 (ACOF) - FS2004 AI Flight Plans
FS2004 Royal New Zealand Air Force AI
[ Download | View ]
Name: rnzafa11.zip
Size: 39,055,799 Date: 02-27-2009 Downloads: 1,562
FS2004 Royal New Zealand Air Force AI Package 1 Redux. Complete AI package of aircraft and flight plans. Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft including Boeing 757, C-130 Hercules, P-3 Orion, CT4 Airtrainer, King Air, NH90, Seasprite, and Iroquois helicopters. This is the definitive RNZAF package.

The second is an airshow package at Ohakea:
FS2004 (ACOF) - FS2004 AI Flight Plans
FS2004 Royal New Zealand Air Force AI
[ Download | View ]
Name: rnzafa21.zip
Size: 29,659,394 Date: 02-28-2009 Downloads: 1,029
FS2004 Royal New Zealand Air Force AI Airshow Package 2 Redux. A complete AI package of scenery, aircraft and flight plans, this is an airshow practice and sortie package which focuses on Ohakea airbase in New Zealand. You will see multi-ship crossovers and manoeuvres at high and low altitude, and heavily-armed aircraft depart for training on far shores, later to return unladen. Aircraft include F-16C, F-16D, and CT-4 trainers.

I see what you mean, Charl, and I tend to agree. But I fear what you suggest is way beyond the capabilities of that map control.
From my perspective if you are searching for something specific, the tables with filter capabilities are the way to go. If you want to check out "what do we have in country xyz" then the world map comes into play. It is mostly the US which is already too overcrowded.

Thanks for the second RNZAF suggestion, I will add it now.
Cheers,
Martin

No problem Martin, I'm just lazy actually...
Scrolling down a country list isn't actually all that difficult!
It's a great resource and I'm sure will be used by many in time to come.
Thanks for adding the RNZAF stuff, too.

The Military AI Reference contains more than 900 entries by now. The Military AI World Map reflect all these plus the MAIW packages. So if you have not been around for a while, you might want have a look again.

Have a nice weekend!
Cheers,
Martin

With a proud feeling I can say that today - exactly 4 months after the introduction - the Military AI Reference has passed 1.000 entries. I like to express my thanks to the kind people of MAIW, AIG and NZFF who - exclusively - have provided feedback and helped to make this list what it is today.

Cheers,
Martin

Well done!
I'm also distracted at present, I have downloaded the KC135 MAIW package, but not yet installed.
According to the blurb, these models have nosewheel steering, in my opinion the last element that was needed for authentic AI.

Which one, Ian? smile.gif

I was saying that the The Owl's Nest Military AI reference list (with download links) of military AI aircraft, repaints and flight plans has crossed the 1.000 mark. In the separate MAIW section you can read the description of each package, which should give you a pretty good idea if it is something for you.

Charl, hello again ....
I was too busy these days to actually use and enjoy FS. But I know the model is new and very much enhanced, so best have a look yourself and tell me biggrin.gif
Cheers,
Martin

Charl, are you by any chance Charl du Toit?

If so, can you please tell me something about a NH90 AI model? You won't believe what routes I followed to track you down - given that you are the same person smile.gif

All I ever had was a comment in a German FlightSim paper. And dead links without end.....

Happy New Year smile.gif

With the exceptions of 22 packages - which will be covered soon - all aircraft (401 in total) from all MAIW packages are now included in the Military AI Reference, extending the list to a total of 1686 records. This should noticeably improve your ability to easily find specific military AI aircraft models, repaints and flight plans.

The MAIW package reference will stay as is. Future MAIW packages will be listed there as usual, plus the aircraft will go into the AI reference.
Cheers,
Martin
