One interesting fact, is that the XP-56 used a PW R-2800 engine, despite the inline look. Pretty out of the box design for 1939...

Conceived in 1939 but first flight 1943 ... dang quick at 417 MPH at sea level guess the prototypes limit range put fold to it .

Ian, do you have this book? I just picked it up from amazon. It's fantastic! XP-56 along with many other rare types and photos which I've not seen prior to this book. The likes of Northrop XP-79B interior cockpit photos. One photo shows the XP-56 sitting in the shop during production and in front of it, the first XB-35 also in production

These are a must have , I don't have both of these books but sure as heck like to , the information and data on the XP-56 is mainly from the MacDonald publication printed release in 1961 cover the weird and wonderful , blimey the flying wings , the fighter and bombers , shows how many years forward thinking ole Jack was .. love to spend a lotta time scwizzing the shelf at that place .. be like a kid in a candy store , place to come for your aircraft details and information .

, you could see why the aircraft could preform some wicked speeds but due to size nothing there to carry fuel for legs

Marty , One your have already dropped off .. i was referencing it today .. very very hi spec data book on many - includes Glenn Edwards , from the X1 into 1950s upwards to the X29 and in superb print , by Jay Miller, a very technical book
