Some of it looks really good and other parts not so good.
Take a look.

Email received this morning the Just Flight DC-8 has been released. Variants are the DC-8-10/30/40 but alas limited liveries so no AIR NZ or JAL, well yet. Looks ok so far downloading now and at a very reasonable price.

Now the unvarnished assessment. Buggy very buggy. High frame rate hit for no obvious reason compared to other sim models. No cabin. A lot of cockpit switches dont work AND here are some major issues I found today:

1. FLAP INDICATOR GAUGE inoperative. (Great you can only tell by lever position)
2. HSI is stuffed, the CDI does not relate to the VOR and does not sit in the correct sense and basically points to north no matter what. DME read out is OK and RMI is ok but the HSI is useless so far. Unbelievable given this is a new release.
3. Radio frequency change knobs are very fluky and hard to set as is the Autopilot altitude and heading settings.
4. There are no wing views or engine views.

Autopilot had gremlins and would not hold altitude until it was switched off and then reset. A pain.

I don't think the paint jobs are all the great the SAS version above is too white. The aircraft is good side on but detail dissappears from oblique angles.

All in all, so so, the aircraft handles nicely and is as I would expect but empty climbs like a steam train and the engine power dials are hard to read in the VC, the FE position is a bit primative and a lot of it does not work. As it is the only DC-8 about I guess I will have to live with its unfinished feel and hope for an update or patch and of course a KIWI livery.

I got caught out with ground services - that little missed switch , but if you follow through the listing of the pre-flight in the manual - The final release versions electrical system is set to exactly how the real aircraft systems are. When the needle is at the 9 o'clock position, it shows that there is no power to the flap indication. Have you started the aircraft through the check lists? One of the checks is to operate the tie system between the electrics. This will apply full power to the flap indication.

Well I did but no joy so far, will try downloading again and doing a re-install. There was an interruption to the download half way through that may have affected it, otherwise it seemed fine apart from the issues already listed. It still is a bit of a frame hog though and I am not sure why as compared to the Capt Sim 707 or 727 this aircraft is not all that complex systems wise. Anyway looking forward to the updates etc but not holding my breath at the moment. But all in all it is great to have a DC-8 at last and as I am a Douglas man this finally completes my hangar which is very gratifying. Always thought Douglas built better aeroplanes than Boeing with one exception whose name we shall not mention.
