You are doing it wrong MartyThere is a way that you can make perfect formations in a minute.
I made a tutorial on how to make a formations. I did this on an other forum (where I'm moderator) but I think it can help you out as well. The only thing you need is a small program called FsRecorder. It's the addon that is used by all people who make video's and it's the first addon I install after a FSX re-install. Get it Here Use the stable version for normal use and the alpha version if you want to make smooth video's. This tool records your flight parameters, and can play it back.
This way you can make formations in no time, and make them as big as you want:
