I love this plane, back in Riccarton high school nearly forty years ago often flying out off Wigram .... other classic was one display at the Omaka Warbird around 2005 and run into engine problems, so they brought down to Christchurch , loved listening to the engine run-ups especially 11.00/11.30 at night , the good thing - whinding up the idiots who buy a house on the old air force ground then complain about aircraft noise .... this one put a smile on dial as it was here for 3/4 days
, the Saturday morning it took off and went up in a spiral and the sound was music to my ears.
Thank you Ian. Yes I too get a large laugh from those whom bounce up and down about aircraft noise, when they buy a house in the area!!! TWATS!!!
I can not explain it but even though she had Twin Wasp 14 cylinder radials, you could always tell when a Caribou was near by before you could see it... Such a sweet sound and fantastic aircraft.

Anyhow, I really miss the days living at RAAF Base Richmond, watching and listening to the Caribou do their things. My father has over 2000 hrs flying the Caribou in his pilot log. So I have no choice but to love this aircraft because I spent some time around them as a kid.

Tim...
I think the most impressive opportunity for me was to be on the tarmac at Avalon on the last RAAF display , least the aircraft , getting up close whilst bringing it in then the final run up and shut down, it had that sound that was unique , think that made it special for me.

Used to get them doing low-level training all round here, including overnights at Gatton College (YGAT), which was about 3km away. They would take off from there, come around to pick up the railway line (the direct track for Amberley) and come barrelling down my street at about 500AGL.
All gone nowMikeW
'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Yes, unmistakable, and it carried a long way, tooMikeW
