12. Kansai International Airport, Japan
Built as an artificial island, the airport is only 15 feet above the sea level. As the airport stands on compacted fill, it sinks up to four centimetres every year.

Its amazing, the Japanese love there artificial island be interesting to see how they going fix this over the years to come , the terminal alone would be a task in adjusting to the changing levels.

Every so often they actually jack the terminal up a little bit and insert a spacer. Quite amazing technology behind it. There's a great doco on YouTube about it

OK , plan so cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it an airport , easy to add to the surface and more ground soil , the constant jacking and adding surely must really cost the airport in moneys , obviously a heavy charge for passengers and airlines.

Not really, the jacks were built in when they started building the terminal.

One area I thought would have been brainstormed, I guess almost automated or adjusted when the airport is at its quietest , definitely have to watch the documentary, going thru the list you pointed out , one airport I did frequent was KL and many times it was empty, funny thinking about it.

One returning trip most flights back were with Malaysia Airlines, three on the 777 one flight was a five hour cockpit stint because I did not get my window seat, it had just gone the missing MH flight , back in Auckland the aircrew girls noticed me at customs and asked about the landing , it was a goodie I replied back , tho the passenger who got my window did not think so.
