P3Dv4.3 ... for the similarly afflicted update junkies!

Postby Adamski » Wed Jun 27, 2018 1:43 am

I just confirmed that I'm a total update junkie. I simply can't wait to install the very latest update/patch/fix. Unsurprisingly, I went for broke and updated to P3Dv4.3 (will I ever learn?).

Well ... I'm blowed if I can see any real difference! A couple of UI tweaks - but we're still blessed with horrid "popcorn" clouds and appalling water. There appear to be some changes to lighting/reflections, but they must be pretty subtle (!).

Anyway - the good new is that it all seems to work as before.

It seems a little murkier than before, so I may need to tweak my HDR values a little. Of course - it could just be the weather!!!

I used the A2A P-40 just to test whether the older/legacy WOP3 models work (they do!!).

1) ORBX: update FTX Central and re-apply the Global Elevations (if you have FTX Global).

2) Chaseplane: seems to have updated itself pretty promptly (!!!). Works for me, anyway!

3) FSUIPC: the latest P3Dv4.2 compatible version appears to work fine.

4) PTA: Applying/editing presets won't work yet (the familiar "wrong P3D version" error) - we need to wait for an update.

5) REX: All my cloud/skies/ground textures applied fine. Haven't tested any "live" weather yet.

It's great to have the old Captain Sim C-130 as a default freebie!

Adam.

This morning I installed the Active Sky beta, so only missing PTA at the moment. Did my normal twice-weekly test flight around NZCH to see how it is coming together, and it seemed... not too sure what it was, but it looked lovely. This was just after installing AS, so my first 4.3 flight with real weather, and the weather was cloudy, but I didn't get the normal sunlight flashes as clouds behind me disappeared, the lighting was rock-steady. I played with settings, turning them up a bit, but lowered the locked frames to 20, as I wasn't getting any more than that in the heavy overcast -- remember that I have a low-end system now, a 5-year-old i5, and a Nvidia 770.

No stutters at all for a change. But as I said, the best was the lack of abrupt lighting changes due to cloud culling, I guess. None of the shadow/lighting twitches and flickers. Marvelous.

I did mention that I installed this update from scratch, normally I wouldn't, but sometimes I think that a clean start is warranted. I've been converting all my addon activations to add-on.xml, so most just ran after the update, the only thing I needed to reinstall were the FTX trees. I'm not sure whether VLC is fully active, though, but I'll check that at some stage. I seem to be missing some waves on New Brighton beach, and I suspect I'm looking at default waves rather than VLC waves.

The only thing I intentionally didn't install were ASCA clouds, so I'm using AS with default clouds. ASCA is sometimes great, but sometimes too much sameness. When I first bought AS I used it with REX clouds, so I might look at reinstalling REX.
