Going bonkers over a Junkers

Postby Adamski » Sat Oct 02, 2021 4:29 pm

I held back on acquiring the MSFS Ju52 as I hate anything to do with Marketplace. Token resistance, though, as it wasn't too expensive - and it's such a *classic* aircraft after all.

I'm glad I caved in, as this is probably the best aircraft for MSFS I own. They really pulled out the stops on this one: the attention to detail is mind-boggling - and I dread to think how many man-hours went into it!!

Anyway ... here's a test flight - at ... guess where <?> LOL!

I also bought this. I have gone down the VR path and this machine certainly does not disappoint. Incredible detail and a delight to fly.

Yay! Another candidate for the Berlitz German language course!!!

I found a couple of YT tutorials for doing a cold start (without a dictionary!!) ... but they basically say follow the in-built checklist procedure and you'll be fine. I did ... and got there in the end - although it took me 1/2 an hour to do it  ... now that's what I call nerdy!

Great shots of this historic old lady 'Tante Ju' in my preferred NZ-landscape. It must be indeed a challenge to go from 'cold & dark' to 'ready for taxi' status.

Thanks! Unlike with the ORBX P3D version, the waterfall here in the freeware MSFS scenery doeen't animate. The airport itself is beautifully done, but it struggles with the immediate.surrounding area, with the steepness of the terrain and foliage. For free, though, it's really very good - and I'm very appreciative!

I find it very strange considering the fact that Niagara and Victoria Falls as well as other falls do animate in FSX but not in MSFS. Very strange. Does your MS2020 (MSFS) have default animated Niagara and Victoria Falls??

I am going to check to see if the fall next to Milford Sound airport does animate in FSX.

Nothing about MSFS would surprise me - it's such a patchwork of good and bad. I've not visited either of those two falls in MSFS (yet), but will take a look.

I doubt whether the Bowen Falls (as they are called) animate in FSX/default. I only know they most certainly do in P3D with the ORBX NZMF add-on, as there was a big discussion about whether it introduced a micro-pause when you reached the end of the runway on take-off (when the animation might have been pre-loading). I no longer have P3D on my system, but last time I ran it, the waterfaall (and ORBX/NZMFF) worked beautifully.

NZMF in MSFS is a freeware addon, so maybe animating a waterfall is too complicated (for a casual developer). What he *has* produced, though, is pretty damn' good nevertheless!

Adamski,

Thanks for interesting explanations and thanks for identification of the falls in Milford Sound airport. Hope your MS2020 has animated Niagara and Victoria falls.

Hi Aharon,

Here's what my investigation revealed (!!):

Niagara - nice, but static:

Incredibly (but maybe not entirely surprisingly) here's what you see for Victoria Falls:

Adam,

Thank you for such amazing screenshots and for sparing time from your busy schedule to check out Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls in your new MS2020. It is much appreciated.

I remember that in my FSX, Niagara Falls has animated waterfalls but have NOT yet seen or checked out Victoria Falls.

One question: what waypoint did you use to find Victoria Falls, please??

Meanwhile, I got to check out if FSX has animated waterfall action for Bowen Falls and Victoria Falls

By the way, for your interesting comparison, fun, and amusement, here is my screenshot of Niagara Falls with animated falls from FSX that you can compare to your Niagara Falls in your MS2020.

I cheated!! I'd already had a few flights in it - and realised they've got the flight model all wrong (no surprises there!!). It takes off like an An-2 - and floats off the runway after an incredibly short space of time. I never knew the Ju52 was a STOL aircraft :D  ^_^

Aharon wrote:One question: what waypoint did you use to find Victoria Falls, please??

I used Google Earth (outside the sim) to locate the falls in RL, then an addon for MSFS that pops up a Google-earth style map (whilst in flight) that allows you to teleport to a location in the map. Unfortunately, saving flights and/or positions in MSFS is a little screwed, so I didn't even bother saving it. The SLEW window in P3D (and FSX, I think <??>) shows lat/long co-ordinates - but the MSFS one doesn't (another nice feature gone AWOL).

Wow - that's quite a comparison!!! Quite a difference in the "eye-candy" department - but, for MSFS, slightly ruined by the immersion-killer of non-animating water. Seems weird that they can animate sea water so well (dependent on wheather conditions too) and yet ignore such major landmarks like the falls.
