A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Rotordude » Mon Aug 22, 2011 10:36 pm

If one downloads a freeware aircraft and finds that the sound files being distributed with it are a commercial developers product that sells for EUR 10.00, and no mention of any rights of use in the readme....what would one do?

Your thoughts please.

Yeah drop a line to them, I agree. If no reply contact the owner.

Are they pretty distinctive sounds? God knows I couldn't tell the difference lol.

First Question , which download site is hosting the above mentioned files .. From there you ban it and if you have you own morals contact the company involved and point out the problem .

1.If I was in the position, I would contact the author of the package you downloaded first. It may have been a case of the author using a soundset he preferred, and forgot to remove it before uploading.
2. If you cannot establish contact with that author, contact the distribution website.
3. Failing contact with the distribution website, I would finally contact the related payware company and tell them what is going on.

I would give steps one and two a couple days maximum to receive a response before moving to the next step.

Just listen to just about every UH-1 sound set out there - Nemeth, Aerosft HueyX, various free ware. I cant tell the difference. Its like they all got the sounds from the same scource.

Unless its your own developed sound set and you feel ripped off, It shouldnt be your problem. I wouldnt worry. I know some will take offence to that but thats my pov.

Contacted, and YES they are the same. All used Filenames and waveforms match, waveforms are like fingerprints no 2 are alike.

Actually, I can understand Andrew's point of view -- I learnt the hard way that you can't expect to get away unscathed by acting as the piracy police. A simple email to the developer "is this legit" is as far as I'd go, but getting riled up in a forum thread makes no sense.
One of the reasons why discussions on piracy are discouraged here, to the extent that they may breach the rules.

I'm not trying to be any sort of "Online Cop" thats outside my realm , I wish I could change the title to "Copyright" or somthing like that but I cant.... I replied, end of story from me..........

All has been sorted. Thanks to those that shared their thoughts on the issue.

It is sorted, at the start of this thread there were no names or product brands mentioned. My OP was to ask "what one should do".
I have been in touch with the author and to sum it up, the aircraft in question was not, is not at fault.

Please don't ask me to point fingers, as I wont. My intentions were no to name names nor to stir up a hornets nest.

Thx smile.gif

At no point did I ask you to point fingers, you're reading into my post what was never in there or could ever be construed to be in there.

Good grief..... At no point did I say you did, it was a simple generalized request not an accusation. your post is a great reflection winkyy.gif
