Reducing FSX load times

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

I haven't tried this myself but a few guys have mentioned that it has a significant impact on FSX load times. It basically involves unpacking and re-compressing .Cab files.

Read about it here.

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Silly question Does it make any difference if you run fsx with the DVD in the drive

Cheers

Jeepers! And here I was thinking that the 3-4 minutes it takes my machine to load the sim was bad. Going to have to look into those suggestions.

The thing that slows it down the most is loading aircraft. This can become a bit of a problem when you've got masses of AI planes. biggrin.gif

Yes it is the aircraft that cause the issues and it would appear that a good deal of load time is on the aircraft gauges.
Hopefully it should work for FS9 too.

Howdy there smile.gif a solid state drive will make all the difference, a significant difference in fact. After lots of research and inquiry it turned out the Intel was the more likely reliable and stable SSD given the technology available in such a component thus far. I kicked the tin, bought two 80gb SSd's, one for operating system and one for FSX......the difference is just incredible. Be interesting to hear others experiences.

I am also running FSX on a SSD, and the difference in loading times is huge. Still not instantaneous, but perhaps 10 seconds even with a lot of add-ons.

I bet that you will soon wish that you had a much bigger SSD, you will probably find that 80GB is too small before long. I wish that I had purchased a much bigger drive.

great performance though.

smooth landings.

SSD is the best answer, but also the most $$
Next is a properly defragged hard drive with FSX folders moved to the outer sectors and consolidate its files there. That will reduce load times too.

After reading this thread, I opened my FSX.CFG and had a hard look at it, it was chokker.

Remembering something I had read, I saved it and removed it, letting FSX create a new one. Old one about 12 mgbs, new one about 6.

On the three occasions since, I find the start-up time, is about a half of what it was, i.e. now about 2 minutes 10 seconds from startup to ready to take off.

As a bonus I also find that a graphics problem I have had for ages is solved, areas of hills in the far distance were being represented as black
squares and triangles, this seems to be solved. The only downside was that bloody awful startup music came back but is simply fixed.

I may have lost a few tweaks from over the years but nothing seems to be having a negative effect. Obviously I can always revert to the original
if needs be but at the moment it was worth the fiddle.

My FSX.cfg is 44 kb. Either I'm missing a lot or you've got some bonus goodies.
