Other than the final screenshot with the hedgerows more organized than VLC, it looks fairly ho-hum and, for those kind of bucks, I prefer to invest in the new and improved VLC when it comes along.

It's not a bad effort although the Deer park at Queenstown is all wrong.
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

I'm a loyalist to VLC, RealNZ, and everything that goes with that, so I'll be sticking with what I have, but at the very least, this product will bring a substantial amount of interest to flying in the country!
Pretty soon, all you'll see on every flightsim forum is New Zealand, New Zealand, and New Zealand!

I've said this before: anyone who isn't a regular at NZFF -- which is most of the rest of the world -- will see an FTX NZSI as a complete and worthwhile improvement, and compared to the default it is. However it gets very tricky for those who already use VLC -- which is better is many respects, but doesn't include all the things which FTX has. Really it's the goals of each product which makes it difficult to know which way to go. I like to be able to recognise any place I've been to in real life, and VLC is the winner here. However 90% of FTX customers won't worry about that, for most this will be their first real introduction to NZ, so it is much more important to them that they can visit a lot of airports and see animated people and trees.

So it is pointless putting too much effort into thinking about which is best for everyone, because this will depend on too many factors. If you are on the fence, you just need to wait and see what happens when NZSI is released.

We've previously discussed producing custom textures for use with VLC, and this is definitely one way to go, but this is such a major undertaking that it may not be worth the time and resources in an area which is basically playing catchup with Orbx. I'll be in a better position to judge once FTX has had a chance to settle into the market.

I can make a case for VLC over FTX in a huge number of areas, but FTX have a lot more developers on their side, so quantity may win out over quality.

Maybe the result of a broader user base will be more nice airports for us, whether they are FTX, Real NZ, FS Creations or someone else. Maybe the answer is to make sure that airports are non-partisan. I must admit that I would prefer to spend my time on airports, since that's how I support myself. Speaking of airports, I plan to look seriously at compatibility issues when FTX SI is released, to make sure that whatever anyone decides now or down the track, their Real NZ airports will still be worth buying.

Actually that rough cut diamond of a beta is starting to look very familiar in a lot of new screens.

New images http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/396...ts-of-interest/

mmm even Nelson has had an overnight face lift. Queenstown has been deforested, enough to convince me for a prepay.

My 2c? It looks better than I thought it would. I won't be switching from VLC, but thats because I fly mostly over the North Island. If they can bring that same attention to AGN detail to the urban areas up north then I'd seriously consider it since noone else seems to be doing it for the NI lately.

And to be clear, I'm not talking about the big cities, I'm talking smaller centres - Paraparaumu (since I happen to live here!), Masterton, places like that.

The AGN is lay,d out the same default , it won't follow the roads such as photoreal , be offset and angled in the small communities , doing autogen is only an hour or so a day and in a month you would have your completed township .

MESH
LANDCLASS
TEXTURE SET
AIRPORT SCENERIES
LOCAL AI

Half a dozen years ago, we had all this sussed in FS9, and it produced a brilliant NZ environment to explore.
(Never mind we had the odd gaping hole, like a 2-generation old model for our principal airport!)

Now with the third element in place, FSX has a chance to make NZ a popular flightsim destination again.
It's great that this part of the world receives this attention, and perhaps more custom airports will follow that make use of the beautiful texture set on offer.

It is also to be hoped that VLC can be made to co-exist with ORBX; it is Work Done, and would be a shame to waste that effort and the accuracy it brings.

As a non resident, even of the hemisphere, I've grown comfortable with VLC........ but. In all fairness, it needs textures beyond 'default' and this latest from Orbx, famous for textures, is going to compete. Thus far the screenies have shown that the flatlands look better (to me) but upper elevations, not so much. Like to see a video since that gives more of a feel - screenies are so 'still'.

Let's try again. I closed this thread temporarily because it was getting out of hand, but it is now reopened.
We all know that Orbx are releasing their NZSI scenery this month, but there seems to be some confusion regarding NZFF's 'role' in this. Some members think that this is the place to bring any grievances they might have from previous dealings with Orbx, in particular their forum. That isn't correct at all. You are still required to stick to all our rules and guidelines, which are available from the top menu on any page. Here are the rules, repeated for those who haven't read them:

1. No swearing, and no attempting to bypass the swearing filters by letter substitution;
2. Respect all other members and visitors to the forum -- no personal attacks, insults or derogatory comments;
3. Do not denigrate other parties; for example other forums, virtual airlines, addon developers or Microsoft;
4. No illegal material or content, including but not limited to: piracy, hacking, cracks, breach of copyright, impersonating other members of the forum (including administrators and moderators), racism or defamation;
5. No pornography or sexual content;
6. Don't post in anger. Yes, this is a rule;
7. If you are subject to suspension or membership cancellation, do not attempt to bypass the process by signing up with a different account;
8. Having more than one active account needs to be authorised by the administration.

This thread has managed to attract posts which breach nearly all of these rules! All we are missing is a few dirty pictures...

We should be able to discuss any development specifically aimed at New Zealanders, and we encourage constructive, friendly discussion. I'm aware that Orbx have their own forum rules, and that some of our members have run afoul of them, but Orbx make no secret of the fact that their forum is tightly controlled. Complaining about that here is of no value to anyone.

In fact, if you have any points to make regarding Orbx, relating to New Zealand, then NZFF is the perfect place to bring it up. But the forum rules still apply!

It is a good time to remind members of this thread -- "For anyone contemplating signing up to NZFF...," If you find a post breached the rules, or you wish to complain about or clarify an offending post, then please contact a moderator or administrator, don't go wading into the thread in anger!
