I've downloaded (1Mb) and run this and,yes it does a way better job than the default XP defrager. You can customize it for gaming too. It comes with a very good PDF. Read blah, scroll down the bottom and click to download.

Hi Jimmy, I found the PDF that gives the info and a lesson about Harddrives good, there is alot of these tools around, look at the adds at the bottom of this page!
I like how you can customize it as opposed to the default which just puts things in any old order. This way you can keep FS at the outer edge of the disk, which apparently gives up to 3-400% improvement on performance. Try it and find out, in theory it should help with lock ups and stutters.
My system is way faster now,I was due for a defrag anyway, but saying that I'm not gonna bother posting something here unless I believe it will help simmers, also it only needs 1% instead of 15% of disk space to work properly and it's a really small program, 1Mb those two things alone impress me, I recommend it, plain and simple, like the bumper sticker says "You either get it or you don't" :plane:
and have a nice day!

they say that modern hard disks, with large caches and NTFS file systems don't need to be defragmented. i might give it a try before i install FSX

Not a freebie, but well worth the £ or should that be $NZ :- Diskeeper. The present incarnation is version 10.

I downloaded the demo and it worked OK, then uninstalled and I SWEAR it trashed my hard drive on the way out!
Because I wasn't watching too closely, I have probably just made a libellous statement.
But there have been instances where demo's promote themselves perhaps a little too well.
Case in point was a Spyware detector demo that told you there was spyware on your machine, so you should buy the full version?
Guess where the spyware came from??

So I bought and installed Diskeeper, and it works fine.
Because I did not RTFM my sim started behaving very badly...scheduled defrags were happening on the approach to Heathrow unbeknownst to me.
Never could get that big jet to stop bouncing off the rwy between freezes, until I told the defragger to go away until 3:00AM ;)

I've been using Diskeeper 9 and its update since it came out and never had a problem with it.The first defrag with it always takes the longest. The microsoft defragger is a cut down version of Diskeeper, way too cut down if you ask me,doesn't do any where near a good enough job compared with the full Diskeeper.I always use a manual defrag as it can interfer with FS but the wife has her's on set and forget and has no probs with it.This other defragger sounds ok though.
