Alabeo Beech Staggerwing released

Read and report on flightsim developers progress of upcoming or completed products

Postby gojozoom » Tue Jun 04, 2013 1:29 pm

Hi guys,

GOOD NEWS: Alabeo released their Staggerwing! It looks fantastic. According to my understanding the flight model was created by Bern Stolle, so that should be good too... and it's only $20 USD!

BAD NEWS: We all know that Alabeo puts the focus on the looks, not on in-depth system-simulations, hence my expectation wasn't high on that regard but there were some rather major bugs on release like the missing magnetic compass (corrupted installer, it's fixed now), and the propeller controls being reversed... Also the documentation is let's say...minimalistic...not much information really.

I'll wait until it goes to Simmarket as they don't charge VAT for NZ smile.gif

You can keep track of the feedback so far here:

I also sent an email to Alabeo about the following minor bugs:

1.) The magneto switch doesn't seem work with neither FSX controls, nor FSUIPC. Something might be mixed up there.
2.) The engine sound pitch goes higher as I decrease RPM. Shouldn't it be the other way around?
3.) Another sound-related thing: when I shut down the engine the shutdown sound comes in with a bit of delay, leaving a small gap in sound. Also about 5 seconds after shutdown, the shutdown sound repeats itself.

I'll share their answer here once I get it.

Hi,

I posted that I'd just got it on the "aircraft" thread but I'll give my impressions here. Most of the earlier reported bugs seem to have been fixed and it's pretty much bang on the numbers with regard to speeds, weights and generally really nice to fly. It looks amazing! Virtually no documentation with it at all so have used the default Beaver & Goose refs to get an idea of MP & RPMs to use for takeoff cruise etc. Seems to work fine.

6 x classic liveries, including plain white, overall red, white with red stripes, silver with white stripes, blue with yellow wings, yellow with black stripes. The interior looks as if it were brand new with piano-black yoke and photo-real textures/materials and wood panelling - it's so good you can almost smell it!

Yes, the sound of the engine does increase as you pull back the prop control, and it speeds up, but I read on another forum that this is correct? (Have had this experience with some other aircraft too. No probs).

As I haven't flown a real one (I wish!!!!), it will run out of up elevator trim on approach but only light back pressure needed and it usually makes a beautiful touchdown (no groundloops or even close - have yet to try a crosswind). Can't comment on the fuel flow as that's really hard to find the info but seems a bit "economical". Max cruise is around 174 kts and flat out she'll do 184. (The figures they provide are correct in kts and mph).

Only one door as an openable feature, which is a real shame, as the cowlings and luggage compartment look as if they could open. Sounds seem pretty close to the real one I saw flying at Ardmore several years ago (ZK-AMU), no longer on NZ shores sad.gif

You have to hand-fly this bird, no GPS or autopilot, but a quick edit of the config and panel, I pasted in from the default C172 - now this may have caused it to start shaking at around 140 - 150 kias, but turned down the the pitch stability to 0.6 from 1.0 and no problem (and it doesn't appear to have affected the handling (which is real nice).

On final or taxying, you may want to crank your seat/eyepoint view up so you can see over the nose in the VC.

I haven't been able to get it to it's claimed service ceiling of 25,000 feet - it "staggers" pun intended winkyy.gif - to get much past 17,000 feet, and that's with the cruise lift scalar increased to 1.2. May have a bit more of a tweak with it (and throw out my passengers and fuel). For slightly over NZ$25, I love it. Frame rates are great even on less powerful machines.

My biggest complaint which may be NZ servers rather than Alabeo: I had to download it 4 x. The first few times it just stopped on about 98 % but the Alabeo people were very cool and adjusted my account back each time as it effectively only downloaded correctly ONCE. (You get 3 x downloads). Whatever you do, don't use a third party download manager. Have had the same experience downloading Carenado planes directly too but when I purchased them from Flight 1 instead, no problem.

All in all, very satisfied customer here - I love it! (And it looks gobsmacking beautiful!)

Regards to all, and will try and provide some screen grabs shortly smile.gif

KiwiElf smile.gif

PS - re the engine shutting down twice, sometimes I get this with most of my prop planes, including the default ones! Could be an FSX or graphic card bug rather than a fault of the model. winkyy.gif

Urmmm now that I've had a decent play - a few little glitches as above:

Mag switch turns with a click of the mouse (left click = on/both - right click = off) but don't seem to do much (but do work on the keypad, just it doesn't affect that visible mag control)
Carb Heat - no switch/knob that I can see, but does work from key pad (rpm drop & audible at higher revs)

Still hunting for reference to real fuel consumption - if I find, will post! pirate.gif

EDIT. Best I could find is an article from an owner of a D17S who claims "about 21 gph at 200 mph" (174 kts) which is the recommended max cruise. Unfortunately he didn't say at what altitude winkyy.gif

At 8,000 ft this one is burning around 15.9 gph according to the digital gauge - could be an "improved economical model" heh winkyy.gif

Have modified the fuel flow setting from the original 0.8 to 1.05 and is now showing 20.9 gph at 8,000 ft, 154 kias, (174 kts Ground Speed, approx 178-9 mph on the airspeed). Thats with 4 x POB @ 180 lbs ea, 125 lbs luggage & 92% fuel.
MP = 30.5, RPM = 1,900.

Your advice and tweaks on the Avsim forum are great gojozoom! We should join "tweaking" notes biggrin.gif

Happy that you found it useful mate. Here are the exact consumption figures from the POH:

gojozoom, that's awesome thank you - went to the site as you advised but hopped on the wrong one when attemptng to download the PDF! (it won't let me)
Looks like I'll be framegrabbing the whole book in sections as per your chart! Time to tweak some more! Will do at around the 9,000 ft altitude and report back the revised fuel flow winkyy.gif

Looking at the handbook panel now, Alabeo have missed quite a few things sad.gif - Did you send them this useful link also???

Kind regards

KE smile.gif

PPS - Your Avatar - one of my favourite airplanes! - GO MOONEY! A Mark 21 was the first plane ride I had at the age of 9 - I've been hooked ever since. Is it yours??? winkyy.gif

PS - have carried our your mods and agree - much better! Can't get her over 20,000 feet tho, even with cruise lift now increased to 1.3, 2 x POB & 40% fuel (and that took a very lonnnnng, stepped climb - haha!) Glitches aside I'm having tons of fun with her.

Yes, I sent them the links with specifications and all that. I wasn't surprised about the missing wobble pump much, but the magneto issue, the missing carb heat, and the lack elevator trim gauges is kind of a biggie... Nothing we can't fix though smile.gif I'm working on those already (porting them over from the Milton Shupe Beech 18 as they are identical) , although I should probably wait for that Service Pack smile.gif

Yes the PDF is read-only, you need a subscription (payware) for the site to download... I made screenshots of the important pages smile.gif

Dan

PS: To be honest, if I owned a plane I wouldn't spend a cent on flightsimming smile.gif My favorite plane too.

TWEAKING UPDATE:

Wow, even my fuel flow increase was wayyy too conservative. Have bumped fuel flow up to 1.68 - this aproximates the 6 and 9000 foot settings @ 2000 rpm and indicated airspeeds, PLUS power & prop thrust increase to 1.1 each. But also confirms that the prop control is working back to front, ie it's using more gas when you bring back the rpms when it should be using less, as are the corresponding sounds., ie is not going to work too well for other settings, but better than it was. Ouch, these [real] planes must be a beast to run and the greenies will hate them!!! winkyy.gif

Also...

* Missing cowl flaps knob/switch
* Missing carb heat knob/switch (works on keyboard)
* Magneto switch fix needed (works on keyboard but no movement of switch)
* Windscreen post compass is out by about 10 degrees, panel one is correct

...and gojozoom's mods

Looks like Alabeo has some work to do! pirate.gif (Alabeo - please add opening luggage door, too... pleeeease ? smile.gif)

There's a patch out now, which fixes a few issues:

QUOTE
-Added a compass.
-Added a starter switch for easiness of operation.
-Added a GEN switch for easiness of operation.
-Magneto switch functionality was improved.
-Nav lights switched. They were in the wrong position.
-RPM sound adjusted. It was reversed.
-Clicking on the yoke now make disappear a bigger portion of the yoke making visible more knobs.
-Some misspellings were corrected in placards and tooltips.
-Some minor adjustments in textures and indicators.[/quote]

That was fast work toprob!

I will have to check it out. smile.gif (Gahhhh more mods!). Technically, the FSX default Beaver or Goose engine specs should do the trick as they're the same Wasp engine if the Staggerwing still don't work as it should - Gojozoom's Fuel Flow chart was really useful! ;-/

Ahhhghhh, Gojozoom has just told me that the service pack may be buggy too - no matter what he does, he now can't start the engine (I haven't upgraded yet...). Anyone else upgraded the Staggerwing and having the same problem?? pirate.gif

Appears this has been a recent cry with engine start problem over past couple of days , not your PC but a Alabeo glitch , maybe best to reinstall your previous version until another patch is released .

Yes, I can confirm that the engine won't start after a shut down. I had just figured out the steps to do a reliable restart with the original released version and now the update has broken it. Though the update does seem to have fixed the random gear and flap lock problems I was having so it's not all bad.

There is an update available when you logon to your account at Alabeo which fixes the startup problem. It does require 3 or 4 pushes of the start button one after the other to get it to start from cold (assuming magnetos, fuel pump and fuel selectors are in the correct positions!). That seems fairly realistic to me for the era of aircraft. I'm liking it more and more

Found a suggestion about the start-up issue which worked for me.
Changed the startup torque in the .cfg from .3 to 20.
