Tauranga Air Show

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby Gavin Conroy » Mon Jan 30, 2012 5:58 am

Gear is the same, just found a nice quiet spot and took more ground to air photos which I do enjoy but never get time to do due to the time the Air 2 Air stuff swallows up.
On the Saturday we spent 4.5 hours on the Hunter Air 2 Air, from planning through to actually doing it and had around 5 minutes of "together time"
Well worth it though.

Thanks Gavin. I was there as well and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Re your neat shot of the old veterans, can you tell me if my old hero, Bryan Cox - author of "Cats only have 9 lives" is amongst them.

I know he lives in Tauranga and as an old Corsair pilot he would certainly have qualified to be amongst that group.

I sat beside a 747 captain who banged away all day with a pretty decent looking Nikon - I wonder if any
of his shots came out as well as yours...

Which Mustang is that in one of Gavin's pictures? The 'Hurry Home Honey' picture. Have not seen it before. Possibly a 'Titan' or have one of the P51's been re-painted ?

Wish I'd gone along with you.....

From the photos in his book he looks like a bit of a "shorty" but if you say it's him, I'll believe you.

Glad you could spend some time on the ground, Gavin!
I imagine framing this shot was much more difficult than most would believe

I'm very glad to have seen my first Hawker Hunter in anger (the plane, not me)
It is an impressive and very fast airshow performer.

I agree, they seem to have done a great job of bastardising it.

Seems money can buy anything these days.. I remember the good times when stadiums, sports teams, tv shows, buses, events etc weren't owned by adverts.. sad.gif Now you can't even see a Strikemaster fly in her natural colours it would seem..

Glad you mentioned that, I thought it might just be me - at first it looked like a paint job in progress, but no! it is ghastly.

The Strikemaster certainly looks different, and if the sponsorship helps the owner operate the aeroplane then all good. Looked a bit like a RENO racer.

Well my son (15yrs) thought that the "V" signwriting was awesome...

I guess it depends on the target audience

I rest my case... I didn't even know it was advertising something, I just averted my gaze.
Mind you I am somewhat one-eyed about this, the aircraft is so ugly to start with, it seems like kicking a man when he's down...

Last few from me, the rest will be on my website when I get around to it.
Probably should have put them in the photography section but never mind.
