FSX first impressions

A forum specifically to discuss the latest and greatest of all flight simulators

First up, I think that people will love this. I did the 2 included missions, and flew around the islands for an hour in the trike. Some things were great, some not so great.
The default settings were very low on my system, but I left them there for the missions -- landing at St Maarten was a steady 20FPS, and went like clockwork -- actually better impression of speed, distance and approach than with FS2004.
The water is the thing I noticed most -- the water effects range from brilliant to strange. The impression of tropical water is marvelous, but i hope that the same bright water isn't everywhere -- as I look out the window here at Lyttelton the harbour is very drab and milky, so I'd be interested in seeing how FSX handles it.
I then turned the graphics up to mid-high, and did some low-level cruising about in the trike. This is a cute little thing, real easy to fly:)
Again, the water really makes an impression:

But the land textures are variable at best. I think its the difference between the stunning water and the not-so-stunning ground that really shows it up. The autogen trees are perfect, but the buildings are, well, so 2004...
With the graphics turned up I was sitting at around 5FPS, which wasn't all that great, but flyable in the trike. Returning to the airport FPS dropped to less than one, which pretty much brought the thing to a standstill, although I could esc -- end flight to get out of it.

WOW!!!!

My girlfriend Lana and I are looking at getting a new computer sometime soon, and I've officially decided it HAS to be able to run FSX. That screenie looks absolutely GORGEOUS! I was beginning to think everything else previously published were renders, but now - AMAZING!

Then again, the FPS issue sounds nasty. What specs are your PC?

So, come on October!!!

Looks good, is there any chance that you could get us a shot of the land? ;)

Thanks,

There are plenty of screenshots of the demo around:

Really mixed reactions around, though.
My computer is an Athlon 2600 with a FX5900 graphics card. I would definitely need to upgrade to use FSX. Would I, though? You bet...

some nice pics there on avsim
just remember it is a pre-release demo, so it will be subject to further performance polishing.

There seems to be plenty of mirror sites to download for free, although when I tried along with the rest of the world I ended up using Bit Torrent, took about 2hrs. Seems they've done away with 2D cockpit(unless I'm missing something)I agree with Toprob about flight models, very realistic, and water-excellent,land-average(compared to 20m&topo)My verdict-yes I'll buy it and yes I'll upgrade as I find a way to pay for it,in fact there's a little old lady going past my house right now! gotta go! :ph43r:

ive just read elsewhere that someone has put their nemeth ec120 in the demo he placed files in all the normal places and works well apart from a couple of faulty gauges cool im starting my download now :)

EDIT:after downloading over night i had a free flight ,i install the alpha merlin and as350 ba all worked good apart from gauges but i didnt try installing them anyway movment in the alphasims merlin changed not so much like a boat and in 2004
but it runs fine with all setting up and frame rates held at 20 25 in most cases apart from trying to run fraps i got a big hit from that but all in all great, its on my list for the deluxe pack

i think if you have a low end system you will not see the full picture of this demo
but even if you slew around you will still see a good sim
hope they get this performance thing sorted with full release ,,

Hi GUys and gals,

i am very impressed with the demo, i get about 5-10 fps with almost everything turned up to max, 2-d cockpit is accessable by pressing f-10, i also love the landing gear view on the CRJ, very unique. the thing that caught my eye was the water, and also the effects when it is raining, you get spray from the tyres and prop/jet wash, the rain looks so much more realistic, but then this is just my opnion, hope to get better frams with the finished result.

i am running a pentium 2.4ghz 1gig ram, 128mb ati vid card, running on a dedicated desktop.

i was mildly disappointed with the demo.
i know its a pre-release demo, but it keeps crashing. the graphics are good, but (like everyone else) i'll need a new computer to make it run at more than 2 fps.

Glad we have that established?

At present, my download of the demo is at 52%. We are on ADSL, beleive it or not, but Lana tends to use the Net a lot and, as a result, not a lot of progress is to be had as she slows the download down.

BUT - I'll let you all have a look-see at my first tentative attempts at FSX when it's finally done. Eventually. Sigh.....

Quite frankly, FSX sucks on my dud graphics card.

Even with the lowest settings, I only get 5fps around St Maarten, and the textures are always blurry. Even when they sharpen up to their normal state, they still don't look as good as the FS9 photoreal..
