Telephone Pole on the Runway

Hi Christian.
Since the install of the Topo scenery, i now have a telephone pole about 2 meters to the left of the runway centreline, and about 30 meters from the 27 end of the the runway at NZWK Whakatane. I uninstalled the topo, and the pole was gone, re-install the topo again, and its back on the runway. Any ideas as to how i can remedy this ?? NZWK is one of only a couple of airports in my sim that are still totally unmodified default.

Lawrie.

Ah, the Whakatane telephone pole. Certainly makes for interesting landings doesn't it?

The problem here is that the default runway is actually out of place, and is placed over a real road. Microsoft deletes the road when you put a runway over it, but leaves the telephone poles in place (makes great sense doesn't it?).

The fix would be either to recreate the runway at correct location, or to create a small exclude. Do you know how to do that? If you want to have a crack at it and share your results I'm sure other people would like to use it as well, otherwise I'll have a crack at it when I find a spare minute...

Cheers,
Christian

I've often pondered the Whaketane Telephone Pole problem too ;)
I use Flattex which does flattens nicely but failed miserably with the WTP:
Exclude=S37 55.50,E176 55.29,S37 55.53,E176 55.31,all

I actually don't know what I am doing.
Where do these lines properly belong in the scenery.cfg file?
You don't want them scattered all over so they get de-activated when you change addons, and you don't want to accidentally de-activate the base plan for New York, right?

Hi Christian and Charl. I figured it would be something to do with MSs runway being in the wrong place (surprise, surprise,...........NOT ). I'll have a go at making an exclude later today, and let you know the results. Yes, Christian, i do know how to make one, and where it goes. Made heaps of flattens, and excludes that work perfectly, especially for older sceneries like FS2000 stuff etc that I'm using in FS2004.

Charl,.......... i used to use Flattex, but gave up on it, as it didnt allways give me a result as accurate as i wanted (maybe i'm tooooooo fussy ???) heh heh. Ive gone back to the time honoured old fashioned way of making them in look-down slew mode,.................... never fails me !!

Don't know which version you used, but the one I have does just that: in lookdown slew mode, you position the aircraft X-hair on exactly the spot you want, click the button, and Flattex captures the co-ordinates, exactly.

I'd be keen to know the answers to my post above, though.

Hi Charl. The excude goes in the scenery.cfg file in your main FS9 folder. It should be the last line at the bottom of that particular scenery's entry in the .cfg file. Well, i tried both manually, and using Flattex, and i can only exclude the telephone poles on the road directly leading up to Rwy 27, and NOT the one on the runway @##**##, grrrrr. By the way Charl, I'm using your AFCAD from GNZ Great Light AI Project. I put it in a folder as follows.....
FS9/Addon Scenery/Whakatane NZWK/Scenery. That way it produces a separate scenery entry in the main FS9 scenery.cfg file so that you can add an exclude (or flatten) to the last line of that sceneries entry. Open scenery.cfg with notepad, and scroll down to the bottom, it should be the last entry if you have just installed it and livened it up in the scenery settings and restarted FS9, as is usual with any new scenery addition. Some scenery designers say put AFCADS in Addon Scenery folder, and some say just leave it in that scenerys main scenery folder. AFCADS seem to work fine either way, as i have found, and loads of others i have talked to
CHRISTIAN,.............. any ideas mate as to how we can get rid of this pole ???, your'e the scenery guru........

Charl, just in case i didnt explain it well enough, this is what my entry in the scenery.cfg file looks like...................

[Area.286]
Title=Whakatane NZWK
Local=Addon Scenery\Whakatane NZWK
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=199
Exclude=S37 55.52,E176 55.30,S37 55.61,E176 55.59,all

If you have a flatten as well in a scenery, the flatten should come before the exclude, exclude always bottom line.

Hope this is of some help to you,

Lawrie.

Yes if you create a scenery addon, you have a place to put the flatten/exclude.
But if like me you have 1,000's of AFCADs, they all go in the Addon scenery\scenery folder, and there are no addon scenery entries for them.
That way, there is no other place a bad AFCAD can lurk and crash the sim.
I suspect most ctd are caused by a hidden rogue AFCAD, but that's another topic.
So I was wondering: does it matter if you put the flatten/exclude lines in the very first entry of the scenery.cfg? Will it slow the sim or cause any other effects?

And yes, I can also remove everything except the stupid WTP.

Over to the scenery design gurus, then

EDIT: Just saw your post above, thanks for the tip on flatten/exclude order

Hi Again Charl. Yes, that @##**y stupid pole is a frustration !! Its the first time ive been to Whakatane in 2 years !! I was flying a Saab 340 from Napier to Tauranga, and i decided just for something different to factor in an engine failure. Guess where the nearest place was.... Well one engine, and committed to the landing, and there right in front of me was this @@##*y pole !! Full power go-around wasnt an option on one engine, dunno how i didnt clip the pole with a prop tip or the landing gear. Needless to say i put it down VERY heavily further up the runway. Strained the landing gear somewhat, to say nothing of the hard braking before i ran out of runway. Think it might need the brakes looking at now. Heh heh

CHRISTIAN,................Please please, please, on behalf of myself, Charl and a lot of others,................... can you fix ??? (no, not the plane i broke,....the pole).

Lawrie.

Lawrie, DID YOU BREAK THE POLE?!? We'll better not tell the authorities! I'll fix it and put it back up so no one notices your little mishap.

Fixed the pole. Just reload and it should be back in all it's glory.

:P

My memory just caught up with me. I've been there aready a few months ago. It's impossible to get rid of the dang thing. Even if you're using FS2004 xml style excludes compiled into bgls.

The only solution is to move the runway to it's correct location. Charl, could you supply an update in your AI pack?

Cheers,
Christian

Thanks for fixing the pole Christian. Thats one less thing i have to worry about paying for. Only have to worry about a broken Saab-340 now. That will probably be cheaper to fix than what the local power board would have charged me for a new pole......................heh heh.
Thanks for info on trying with the pole,.................... maybe Charl will come to the party with a newly located runway. (hope he's got a good fleet of motor-scrapers and bulldozers in his garage at home).................

Talk about passing the buck!
OK you tell your mates over at VOZ to stop poaching our BN Islanders, and I'll see what I can do.

(Checks garage for current motor-scrapers and bulldozers inventory <_< )

Charl, the VOZ AI has been pulled because of permission issues. Are you saying Koorby didn't ask for permission for the BN Islanders either? May have slipped through his fingers then, not sure...

Please don't feel pressured doing an AFCAD - I just got the idea because you were supplying AFCADs anyway with your great AI pack. I'm currently revisiting AFCADs also, but it may take while until I get around fixing Whakatane...

Cheers,
Christian

VOZ AI has been pulled

Ooops, I didn't realise. What's the problem?
No sweat about the AFCAD, I'll do it next time I have something too heavy to fly around the telephone pole (As a confirmed rotorhead this buys me a little time! :D )
