Something odd in Queenstown

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Hey guys..

I cross posted this over at Vistaoz - hope no one minds.

I have this problem with Queenstown. I assume its got something to do with some changes I may have made to my CFG file.

Below is an image of the airport at Queenstown in NZ.. it shouldnt look like this.. there isnt a huge cliff that drops into the lake.. and those roads shouldnt be going down the cliff face etc.

I have flown in FS9 around Queenstown before and it doesnt normally look like this.. so I assume I have messed a setting up whilst making changes somewhere..

Any ideas how I can fix this?

if you were muckin around with the fs9.cfg I would just remove it and let fs make another one.

Well No I dont really want to do that.. as I want to keep all of the settings and tweaking I have done except for any which is causing this problem.. so my enquiry was to see if someone knew what the specific setting was..

I would move your fs9.cfg to your desktop (you can always copy it back), start up again and see if it fixes the problem. If it does then close FS, open both cfgs and put them side by side and see whether any terrain settings differ.

I was just trying that was you were typing that response I think.. I moved my cfg file and had FS create a new one and I still have the same problem.. so its not something in my cgf.. I assume its my scenary etc thats a problem.

Probably a good time to purchase Chris' NZ mesh and stuff I guess :)

Yes MS has a time-limited mesh which drops all NZ lakes after 32 fly-overs, and the only fix known is to get the RBE 20m mesh and topo. :o

That happened to me with all the South Island lakes when I was using the freeware NZ 75m mesh too- although it is all sorted now I have the payware 20m mesh.

Are you serious? I thought it was just an error with the GeographX package...?

No I am not serious.
But I do belive that the RBE mesh + topo is a prerequisite for flying in NZ.
And if you don't have it, and get funny effects on lakes AFCADs and anything else, you know the answer now.

When i used to use the 75m Mesh, i had the same problem as well. It wasnt quite so bad after installing the NZ Lakes Level fix from Christian. But now that i have the 20m Mesh and Topo, Peter Lohrs Queenstown, and the lake, are now shown in all there beautiful glory as they should be.
20m and Topo,...................A MUST for all NZ Simmers.

Hi Guys,

I do most of my virtual GA flying around queenstown & the southern lakes, since I work & live around there. I'm sure christian will chime in at some stage but this was a known issue with the lake levels as defined by MS that was easily fixed using the old fs2002 lakes fix. Garbage data used by MS where as I believe Christian resampled the raw information fro scratch as supplied by NZ Lands & Surveys department. The mesh data is of a better accuracy than the MS lake levels, which were not able to be fixed as a part of any mesh package.

I agree though - you can't fly GA in NZ without mesh and topo from RBE, the accuracy of the default mesh & topo information from MS was woeful.
