Things are very slow

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

I'v got my new pc with a p4 2.4 ghz and I would expect things too be a little faster than my old 1ghz machine.

Yet it is not  for example I drive a Dash8 upto nzch and got a buliding crash then had to sit and look at the sim doing absolutly nothing for 5mins ,just showing the ac in spot view with buliding crash across the display, I eventuly opened up taskmanager and ended the fs9 process.

I loaded up the posky A330 at a defualt nzwn and switched to spot view only to wait for 3mins for the textures to load on both the scenery and ac.

Or when I choose to look out the side window while in the 2d flight deck it can take upto 1min for it too switch view then the textures to load and fps to come back upto there normal 20.

Is there anyway I can speed these things up cos its near impossible to get anything done in the short time i'm allowed on m pc each day :(
Sitting looking at a locked upsim for 10mins (yes thats the record) can be very frustrating when I'm trying to fly a whole flight in under 2hours.

Thanks in advance :P

And what RAM have you installed compared to your previous machine?

Most likely 256mb to which you really need 512mb to run FS9 ideally 1GB is the comfortable maximum. Anymore than that and FS9 does not make any noticable benefit from any less and then even with a 2.4ghz P4 you will still run slow.

Next question is what Graphics card you running? Integrated graphics card? if so then anything to do with RAM is a waste of time.

Graphics Card then RAM they are the things that run your flightsim.

Okay, I have 256mb currently but plan to buy anothor 512mb as soon as I can afford it.

I have a geforce5600 so that means I don't have intergrated ,right? lol

So my procesor is fine for flight simming?

Once I have 768mb of RAM will I not experiance these frustrating delays and better fps cos they are currently very low too?

cpu is fine james ,ram have you at the moment got 2x128mb to make up to 256?
if not this could be part of the problem you should always have even amonts to reach your 768 ,,so that would be 2x128 +2x 256 this would give you the correct way to add ram to 768mb ,,all should be same brand or compat with each other
if i was going to upgrade ram id be putting in 2x512mb chips
graphic card sounds fine but this also could be slowing things down with the loading side of things as both together have so much to do with performance
hope this helps

Would not think so if he brought the system as is! Yes adding 512 will make a great differance just make sure as natas has said it the same type.

Until then the Graphics Card is reasonable but without that RAM your system is being held back and reacting slow.

Think that covers is it in one! Anything else anyone addds will just confuse you more.

Great :D I'll get more RAM as soon as possible. I plan to do it in 3 stages.

Get 512 and run that beside the 256,
Then get a 1gb and run that beside 512 and sell the 256,
sell the 512 and get another 1gb.

I have only 2 slots so is this possible to have the differant sizes running together, I was told this is possible.......

it is very much possible.
you might like to try to defrag your hard disk too, it might speed it up
