Hmmmmm...

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

I got the new system up and running. Added a lot of the little tips and tweaks I'd been reading about on the net, including the one from VOZ.

Here's my deal:

I flew a little hop from Hamilton to Auckland using the Dreamwings Dash-8-200. I was impressed that even in clouds I got no stutters (even though my FPS was around 4 or so). But the ground textures were BLURRY through the whole flight. Robin's Real Auckland looks like a jumbled mess when it's blurry. And on approach to NZAA, I had no runway as a visual cue. I paused the sim about a mile out, and about a minute later the runways and taxiways popped to life.

What am I doing wrong? I have pretty well had to start from scratch with this system, and it is worth it.

My Official Specs:

AMD 64x2
nVidia FX5500 PCI w/ 256megs
2 gigs DDR2 RAM
250 gig SATA HDD

Any help? Thanks!

Care to post a screenshot?

It might be the same problem that I was having, so I might be able to help you.

As natas03 says, try getting the latest driver for your card- but if that dosen't help, try a slightly older one (nvidia 8.5 works well for me)

Hi Rob,

Sounds like drivers for the video card, that's a hot system that you have there.I think the others have more or less called it right.3D clouds can have quite a hit on performance but your system ought to handle that ok

Hey guys! Thanks for the input.

Clouds really haven't been a problem so far. Even though my fps is low, I'm not stuttering (weird, must be that "dual-core" thing). Did a little toodling just around the AKL area (AKL-city-Ardmore-AKL) last night, and things weren't too bad. It was just driving the Dash 8 at 230 kts into the area that made things all weird.

I do have the newest drivers for the card, but I will roll back to the old version tonight to see how that works. Or, I might go to 3dGuru and see what tweaked drivers they have. Haven't been there in a while.

As for the landclass, Mike, I am using the same landclass as you along with NZ Topo.

Maybe it's 'cause I use 100% traffic or something that my FPS is low. I don't know. I just love flying amongst the other birds in the sky.

I think that you can tweak your display for slow, getting good sharp textures in your immediate vicinity most of the time, or you can tweak for fast, getting ok textures all around. This is really two opposite goals, so you need to compromise somehow. There are plenty of photoreal tweaks around which don't do anything for me -- they are designed to keep the textures displaying as you fly fast and high -- but there are others which give me the result I want -- real sharp textures, provided I don't go over 140kts.
