Rare Visitors to AKL

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

How come there are some many rare aircraft visiting NZAA at the moment?

If you search up the Auckland page on Airliners.net, you will see recent photos of a Netherlands Government Fokker 70, an Icelandair Boeing 757, an Israel IAI-1126 Galaxy registered to a Californian Businessman and an untitled Bombardier BD-700-1A10 Global Express!

What are they all doing here?

Hey Trolly,
The Icelandair 757 was here due to a Round the World Charter by Some Europen Tourist.
The Netherlands Goverment F70 was here due to the Goverment's Visit to South East Asia and Australian & New Zealand as well.
The Bombardier was Actually Carrying the South African PM who Visited Australia and New Zealand.
Not too sure wht the Gulfstream was here for.

Looks like there is going to be some summit thing going on next year in Auckland (an APEC one or something), and with it will arrive George Bush, and with him, yes you guessed it......

AIR FORCE 1!

Surely you didn't miss Bill Clinton - he arrived with AF 1 + 2, plus about 40 armoured limo's.
Then he jumped out in Queen St and made a boutique owner's day with a little impulse shopping.

Hey trolly,

Sometime mid-next year I believe, cant give you a fixed date yet. But I will assure that I will most definatly be at the airport for that, even if it means an airfare from PMR and back haha! :P

Just imagine "Air Force 1, Cleared to land 23L, winds XXX at XX." Oh man I cant wait!

Unfortunately I did miss this, I have only been living here since 2003, and have only been planespotting this last year really.

I wonder where on earth airforce one is going to park up for its stay?

They are really going to need to beef up security the day he arrives, it's possible to practically get air side at the moment!

P.S. rAj, thanks for the info. Where do you find those sort of things out?

I reckon it will be either the new hard stands, (ie stand 15-18) or 70-73.

see this link: NZAA Apron Chart

Hopefully see some jets around NZWP or even NZAA aswell....

Thanks for the link KAG, I found another shot from the same day here: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0048183/M/

Just a few questions:
1) Why where they parked at the ANZ Maintenance hangers?

2) Why did both Airforce 1 and Airforce 2 (the twin) have to come? Isn't one 747 enough?

3) The date those shots are from is September 11th (spooky). Does that mean the next world wide leaders meeting will be in September 2008?

I did hehe, I had a chuckle to myself over that..

1) Why where they parked at the ANZ Maintenance hangers?

I think it was the only decent place to park 'extra' planes in that time, as far as I know, the hard stands around the Intl Term. didnt exist ..

2) Why did both Airforce 1 and Airforce 2 (the twin) have to come? Isn't one 747 enough?

I wouldnt have a clue haha, I think its called extravagence (sp?) :P Oh just a word of note, I dont think the other is called Airforce 2, I think that is reserved to the Secretary of State, so either are AF1, the other just another military plane...

3) The date those shots are from is September 11th (spooky). Does that mean the next world wide leaders meeting will be in September 2008?

I dunno actually, I just heard that he may well be visiting in mid 2007...

Hope that helps a bit... :P

Both Airforce 1 & 2 go everywhere together as one acts as a decoy plus there is a lot stuff to cart around - a few Galaxy loads came in before AF 1 & 2 carrying limos, cars, helicopters (VH-60) , people and equipment. Clinton also had a USAF Gulfstream here and that flew him down to Queenstown as a 747 obviously could not land there. There was also a USAF VIP 757 carrying the secretary of state (?). A massive operation.

There was not alot of room at the APEC meeting in '99 for all the planes as there were for example an Illuyshin from Russia another from China, 757 from Mexico, RAAF Falcon 900, A340 from Brunei, two 747s from Japan, Canadian A310 and others.
