Trans Tasman Endurance Flight- Who wants to join?

For everything about online flying around New Zealand

Postby ardypilot » Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:36 pm

I like doing virtual tours in flight simulator.

This started back in 2003, when I journeyed around the USA in a Metroliner (Key West, Miami, Washington, NYC, Chiacgo, Salt Lake, LAX, Las Vegas, Houston, New Orleans, Key West)

Then in the following summer, I flew from London to Auckland in a 737. (London, Munich, Dubai, New Delhi, Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bali, Dawin, Sydney, Auckland)

Next in 2005, I completed a 9000 mile trip around the edge of Australia. (Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne, Adeilaide, Perth, Darwin, Cairns) known as "OZ TOUR 2006"

More recently I have completed short tours, including 'VOZ TOUR 2" from Hobart to Canberra, and the "LONG WHITE CLOUD TOUR" from Kerikeri to Milford Sound.

This summer, I plan to fly another tour, From Okiwi Station to Port Macquarie, right across the Tasman, stopping at Kaitia, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island... but there is a twist. Instead of separating each leg out over a few days, I am going to do it all in one night... on multiplayer!

Flying my Feelthere Cessna Caravan, the flight is expected to take 9 and a half hours, cruising at 20,000 feet over the 1300 miles at a speed of roughly 140kias... at 1x speed the whole way, accompanied by real world weather. I am not sure whether or not to do it during a sunlight or realtime dark night yet though...

I know it is a long time, but I just want to attempt it to see if I am capable of being 'long haul' material maybe sometime in the future, and I would like it very much if some NZFF members would join me online over this time.

It would help if you had the payware Feelthere Caravan installed, so we can all fly together in a loose formation at the same speed, but if not, you can simply fly the default fs2004 Carvan, and easily tweak the aircraft.cfg to make it appear the same plane is everyone else... more details on that, along with a flight plan and custom repaint later :P

I am planning to do this flight sometime early December, once my NCEA exams are finished, and I am on summer holiday from college. We would begin at around 6pm, and finish between 3am and 4am the next morning, with many doses of Red Bull handy to keep us awake along the way ;) If you would like to come with me, please post below a date you would be available.

Cheers!

I'd be keen, this would be in FS2004 multiplayer I presume? It'd probably be better to do it on IVAO or VATSIM so FSX users can take part as well... we would sort it with VATPAC/equivalent IVAO organisation so we do not have to take part in ATC...

Count me in regardless, but I'd like to see us using a multi-platform MP network.

Sure, I don't mind waiting for you Jimmy- originally, you were the first person to agree to come with me, so just let me know when you are free. Hopefully you can get your computer issues sorted out in time!

P.S. What is wrong with Hamner?

I was thinking default multiplayer on the Inspire server so I could fly with the guys from NZFF... the more the merrier and all, as some don't know how to use IVAO and VATSIM, but you say FS9 pilots and FSX pilots can fly together on these systems? That is new to me and sounds very cool! I guess it is up to everyone else what we fly on, perhaps I will create a poll if there is enough interest.

Great :D any weekend other than that one should be great. Ill approach my parants with the matter this evening  my pc should be fine by then... I just toook it to the hsop a gfew hours ago.

Oh and the only thing I have against hamner is its a whole weekend (friday to tuesday is a lot of time in a hot pool!) with no computer at all. (that sounds quite bad doesn't it) lol

I'm for it, I would personally prefer IVAO over VATSIM or default Multiplayer however I don't feel really strongly about it. ;)

I too would like to have the weekend of the 9th/10th of December off because I will probably be busy on the evening of the 10th with Crowded Skies. ;)

I sorta agree with Alex, IVAO would be better than default MP. I'm sure setting myself up in IVAO isnt too hard.

I have put VOZ, REAL NZ and NZFF decals on it already... if you want your logo on there, gimmie an e-mail!

About flying online... I have to say I agree with Craig, it makes the most sense to use it as everyone has it ... but saying this, I would be nice to get 9.5 hours added to my IVAO account :P

Well I asked my parants and it was a straight "NO" :( They have this big idea that a one off like this will really damage my health or something <_< Aaaarghh

So the only way id be able to join you if is it was like a 1pm start or something

Sorry to hear that Jimmy, they may change their minds yet, especially if they take the time to check out NZFF and see we're not a bunch of 'deadheads'.
I will be there if I can and as long as I know how to connect in plenty of time etc...
I have the feelthere Caravan and would like to get that livery from Trolly too.
These are great events, I do the round the world each year and that takes days non stop.
I learned heaps from doing it as people pass on all sorts of valuable info, tell jokes and generally have a good time.
Friday or Saturday night suits me best but 1pm Saturday is Ok if need be. :plane:
BTW having to perform when you're tired and bored with nothing but ocean is a good test of your metal as a pilot.

I see the point in just using the default multiplayer, but do we want ATC? It would be pretty cool to have ATC wherever we go...

Just did some planning too, and we probably wont need to fill the tanks until we get to Lord Howe Island.. Impressive range the Caravan has!

If on IVAO I would be happy to provide ATC inside NZZC/NZZO FIR. And personally I would prefer a 1pm departure (or sometime thereabouts). As probably a night of flying wouldn't go down extremely well. ;)

Alrighty, would you guys be able to make a 1pm departure, with approximately a 10pm arrival during a weekday?

Even a 2pm (11pm arrival) or a 3pm (12am arrival) would suit me, so just post a departure time and date you would prefer here.

I don't think any of us would have enough time to spend an entire afternoon and weekend online would we? I certainly wouldn't- sorry!

As for a date, how about on the 4th or 5th of December? If thats too early, then how about the next week?

An another idea I had, is it possible for members with IVAO accounts to fly online together, joined by non members, but we can just share our IP address with them... or is that against the rules?

4th or 5th & anytime from 1300-1500 would be sweet for me
