I have been getting a lot of spam mail recently under the "label" in my junkmail folder that says the sender is "postmaster" and the subject is "Undeliverable Mail"

When I check the source, I see that it is not mail I have sent, but mail that has been sent to my by members of this and other forums I visit.

Could it be that some members are infected by a virus that is sending out e-mails from members' accounts?

Could I be infected? I am fairly sure my box is likely to be clean - I run very regular spyware and virus scans with separate programmes. (Zone Labs and Norton).

I have a firewall (Zonelabs) working full time too. My "paranoia" settings are fairly high too. It's my "bet" that some people with me in their e-mail address folder are infected - if you have my address, I'd recommend a scan.

Hmm, I was getting 4-5 spams a day, but they have all dried up now. For a while in the middle their the sender address was also the reciever address (me) <_< .

I think that paranoia is infectious. I think I am going to run a spyware scan while I go for a run.

Alex

PS; I don't think I have your email adress, but, as above I am going to run a scan anyways. :P

Chris you are just the victim of a troller.
They roam all over, and specially forums, harvesting email addresses.
They mailbomb under these spoofed addresses
I had one which completely took over a domain name of mine for a while.
I got him in the end through his ISP because he got greedy (and they often do).
I'm told that 80% of all email is spam.

The posts you see are generally the ones rejected by their recipients.
Set up an email rule which junkmails anything called "undeliverable"

Could I be infected?

I hope not Cbris!

I think I have just got infected too. Last night I tried downloading this "Hide IP" software, thinking it would be good to have running during my Trans Tasman Flight today (to prevent people hacking me), and all of a sudden, my google page automatically is redirecting me to www.google.ae and everything is in arabic.

Also, everything is taking extreamly long to load (I suspect some spyware is running in the background), and I have started getting spam to my new e-mail address for the first time ever :(

I have run Spybot S&D, and am now dowloading the latest AVG update to see what it can find, but by the time it has finished and performed a compleate search- it will be a good few hours time. Argh!!!

Buddy thats because your hide IP prog is locked into a Saudi proxy server it means it is working properly as Google ID's your IP address and decides which part of the world you are from. You can turn it off by right clicking on it in the system tray and selecting exit. AND dont forget that when you use a proxy server then your Internet is slower if its half a friggen world away coz all the IP traffic is going through that (Plus free proxy servers are a bit slow anyway)

In other words you DONT HAVE A VIRUS Trolly

Trolly, I may be completely off-base here but this is how I understand things...

Bear in mind that for multiplayer to work correctly all players need to be able to interconnect with each other - via the machine's actual IP address.

If someone's IP address is unreachable (eg the data is sent to the IP addy of the machine that FS *thinks* is yours but it's somewhere on the other side of the world and perhaps the UDP data doesn't transfer correctly) then others could have a problem connecting (although I can see you on the server at the moment with others so maybe that side of things is all ok).

Also, if you ping increases due to the distance the data has to travel you could end up zig-zagging your way across the Tasman (well it will seem like that to others :) )

I can't see how just using your connection in the normal manner would compromise internet safety, however if anyone wants to check on what's open to the world, try the Shields Up link at GRC Com.

I have not received a virus or otherwise when flying or gaming online. Look at the amount of people using online network flying, gaming (World of Warcraft has millions of world-wide users), or P2P downloading. The worst virus is the person sitting at your PC, who downloads something dodgy or receives an email with an attachment, then opens or installs it.

As far as receiving emails, seemingly addressed from you is concerned, it's possible that someone else's PC, with your email address, is sending them, with you as the sender. If the address is not valid it wll bounce back to you (as the 'sender'). there's nothing you can do to stop this apart from change your email address.

Hope this is helpful

:D

Hi guys,

All is sorted now. I just had to go into my Mozilla Options->Network Settings and configure the proxies for "a direct connection to the internet".

On a more important note- I have since learned that Cbris recieved the spam from my old e-mail account (cheekytrolly@hot...). Let me say now that I havn't used this account in ages, I only keep it open as I sometimes recieve topic subscription notifications from the Flyawaysimulation Forums, which I signed up to on that account. I haven't sent a message from that address in about 6 months, and certainly never ever spammed anyone. I think someone is pretending to be me, with the "GuestTrolly" post on here earlier, which was also not from me.

Please be warned, if you see anything from a cheekytrolly@hot... e-mail address- do not open it :!:
