The second series of screenies from FSX showing what the sim is capable of doing.

With the release of Robins NZWN and region FSX patch I thought this would be a great opportunity to do some shots closer to home, and test the scenery as well to update my review on Flightsim.co.nz. I also thought that to do this justice I also needed to get motivated and do my first FSX repaint, NZWN simply wouldnt be NZWN without a 737, so out came the paint brushes and the rest as they say, is history.

So here are the shots, and a first look at my new FSX only B737-800 repaint which will be released very soon.

Once again a note to say these images have not been edited or 'touched up' in any way, only resized from the 1280x768 originals, so what you see is what is in the sim (The second to last image shows the power of the new graphics, thats amazing sunlight through the clouds). Enjoy

Amazing shots Jon, cept I'm not sure I like that effect of water on the taxiway, pictured in shot 4.

Dam you annoy me Jon!

I was a real FSX cynic, but your screenshots are so much more beautiful than anything FS2004 could create, than I am starting to fall for the new sim

It's beautiful alright. There's so much potential in FSX.

Looks fantastic, thanks for posting these. Its certainly giving me more of an idea of what FSX is capable of. Just out of interest, what sort of FPS are you getting with these shots?

OMG... shot 3 is absolutely stunning... i had to check it 3 times to make sure it wasnt a real photo that you had snuck in!

I am definitely going to install Vista 64bit tonight and see what FSX looks like...

Excellent question, and was the one I have been waiting for. The FPS vary from a low of 4 to a high of 22 (22 being the max I have set). They average at around 12, certainly getting slow the more detail and activity taking place. and when the sun comes into view as thats where the frame rate killing 'bloom' tends to hit the most. I have used bloom in these shots because its amazing, I dont tend to use it so much when I'm flying.

I agree that the bloom does look spectacular. It all just looks so good!! I sat there staring at the screen just going wow! Especially when you think just how far FS has come over the many years.

So what sort of machine are you running it on and I take it those FPS settings are with the AI traffic (and ground traffic) off or on low? I'm not tying to pick holes in this I'm just trying to work out if I should upgrade to FS2004 by getting a machine that will run FS2004 well or to hold off a bit longer (ie save a lot more pennies) and get an FSX machine.

I have a dual core Pentium, MSI NV 7900 GTO with 512ram, 2 gig ram. The AI is set at 100%, ground (road) traffic is 0%. If I want that I have to turn off lots of other things, Its just to FPS hungry I find.

I have saved a number of config files depending on what I want to do, so performance varies depending on what I am doing and why. If your computer runs FS9 VERY well, it will run FSX well, but dont expect everything on high, it wont happen. I still need to upgrade, probably 4gig ram, a second 7900 GTO using SLI connection and ideally a dual core extreme processor, preferably quad core under vista.

Thanks for those pointers, sounds like you have some serious computing power at the moment! It would appear that I have some thinking to do about future computers and how much money I am prepared (or allowed) to throw at it.
