Could you land a REAL plane?

  I could do it as long as i could land outside the Aircraft.. as on flight sim i have never landed inside the flightdeck

haha im sure the pax woudl be thrilled to know the guy whos gana land the aircraft is standing on the tip of the tail to "get a good view" You should definatly fly from the "inside" as its so much more realistic and can give more satasfaction. Although I imagine landing a heavy in poor weather would be most chalenging without the panel!

Well I've given this one some thought.With all the years that I was flying and I had twin engine rating and fully ifr to boot,with the DC3,I wouldn't fancy my chances of landing a modern airliner in one peice.Sorry to be a damp rag but this is where flight sim can be very misleading.A little knowledge can be very dangerous.you have to train to know the dynamics of an aircraft IN EVERY SITUATION,AND HOW TO HANDLE IT.If I was put in that situation,what the hell.If you are the only one available,then I would give it a go ,you gonna die anyway,one chance is better than nothing.I would call for an experienced pilot to give me a hand to get the aircraft down,and the boys in the tower would certainly be there to help you.It would be a matter of following instructions to the letter.Your flight sim tactics wont work in the real world.One mistake in the real world and its lights out,GAURANTED.

and don't rely too much on help from the tower now days - a lot of the controller population doesn't even get flying training anymore, the accountants don't want to pay for it - we will be restricted in what we can do both from a procedural (liability) standpoint and probably just the lack of time - best we can do realistically is call the airline, get a pilot on the line and keep eveyone else clear. (and regret leaving the digtal at home today- coulda made a fortune selling the prang to the networks!)

Yeah, I totally agree with gokanru. Flightsim makes flying so easy compared to real life. Here's a basic example that I've found:

When on VATSIM I can happily talk to the appropriate ATC and move off the blocks. However when flying the Tecnam at Nelson, I have to have my mind solely on moving the aircraft instead of chatting to ATC (so that I don't shoot off the blocks into a drain or the Rescue Helicopter Hangar )

i have been on an Air New Zealand a320 simulator and it takes 2 tries to get the landing right then you can land it all right with a bit of a bump

I used to think that mine was so unco, but considering that most flying apart from instructors rating is done from the left seat, you do get very used to using your left had, left hand on control column, right hand for throttle/props/comms. My right hand only ever touches the C/C on long legs on a cross country

Just try putting your joystick by your left hand, yould be suprised how with in a day you can fly great with the left hand Also easyier to have the mouse on the right side of the keyboard and stick on the other.

its not like a joystick at all i thought it was going to be hard to use. You can just use ur thumb and finger and fly it easily enough.

and in the sim i did formation flying with traffic in there for 3 hours i had 2 brothers with me so i didn't get as much time in it as i wonted.

Yea, having some time in a full motion sim would be awesome.
Think of the feeling on landing with brakes, spoilers and reversers (to a lesser extent, flaps ).

I tend to spend alot of time hanging upside down in full motion sims dogfighting.

I'd like to think that i could get it down without destroying anything but in reality I think i'd get creamed!!!

I did over 2000hr on a PPL (glider towing was a good way to get free hours) flew most single engine types and a few hours in twins....gave up when I moved to Papua New Guinea in 1991 (not much private flying done up there) its now all desktop flying!!!!

Depends what aircraft. If it came down to me being the only passenger that knew how to fly a plane I would give it a shot. Just pray the weathers good and chuck it on autoland...done!

Hah good call Alex I don't think simmers would have as good a chance at landing all that safely.

But it wouldn't matter how well ya land it anyway (to an extent), the aircraft would most likely be checked out thoroughly after landing.
