I spoke with the pilot, he said it was rolled out from the paintshop the day before, looks very similar to the livery on the 3 at wigram. I really like it :thumbup:

Beautiful shots of the DC3 Jon - the paintjob makes it look stunning!

Putting aside how good it looks though - why couldn't they get the kiwi right for the roundels?

It looks like they did a decent bit of research as the colours, lettering and overall positioning of the markings seem to be very close to the original, but the bird in the roundels is definitely a species yet to be discovered. :blink:

Have a look at the correct kiwi on the Harvards and you'll see what I mean. Shame really as it spoils the finished product. To nitpick further someone seems to have decided that there was a need to come up with unique styles of rescue arrows as well (they should have been red, or yellow - not black).

Stunning looking aircraft still. All credit to the painters, but unfortunately let down by their researchers.

i dunno, they look the same to me (i.e. joe public who has no idea about new zealand military history)

:wub: :wub: :wub: DAK is beautiful once again, someone really needs to paint this for FS9 asap!!!

That would have been Geoff you were speaking to Jon, he's also the ANZ 777 Chief Training Captain whose photos are pinned at the top of this forum. A great guy.

Thanks for uploading these shots, they now have a perminent home on my harddrive.

I have actually included the full set of the DAC photos in their original high resolution (2592x1944) I took on the CD that is coming with the 'other' items coming your way ;)

Exactly the Harvard I was referring to Charl. Probably based at the same airfield too :D

I think I have worked out how they got the wrong bird on the roundel though.

I have looked at my copies of the original painting plans for the RNZAF DC3 and the wing roundels look VERY similar to what ended up on the aircraft. Trouble is, the Kiwis drawn on the plan are just hand drawn as a representation of where the roundel should go - NOT what it should look like. There is a standard Kiwi template, available at the various sizes, that would normally have been referred to.

In the painters defence, there is usually a reference on the plan to the relevant NZAP document in which the roundel is accurately specified. On the DC3 plan there is no such reference. However the fact that on the plan the Kiwi in the roundels varies dramatically in the various positions should have been a clue ;) To put this into perspective though, the RNZAF often get their own aircraft repainted incorrectly these days too :o (Although not the roundels)

Charl has got the correct one there from a Harvard. Here is a clearer view, side by side, this time of an RNZAF Kingair vs the DC3. Note that the colours on the DC3 are correct. They aren't supposed to be the same as the current colours.

The rescue arrows are clearly specified on the plan as yellow edged with black - somehow that got reversed to black edged with yellow during the painting process.

None of this should take away from the fact that the aircraft looks fantastic in its new scheme - all credit to Warbirds and the painters for doing such a nice job. :D
