Aviation Services PPL exam difficulty

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

I got a question on my FRTO exam that asked whether a passenger was allowed to use your radio to call a taxi!

The worst question I've seen was one which asked whether or not you could fly without a working ELT in a powered single engined GA aircraft. Two of the answers were:

- Yes, if you carry a functioning portable ELT which can be accessed by all on board.
- No, you must have a working ELT to fly.

Technically both those answers are correct. You can fly with a portable ELT which everyone on board can access, for no more than 7 days. (the way the question was worded implied it was just for one flight) However, you could not fly if you had no working ELT at all, so the second answer is also correct. I just chose the second one and critiqued the question and I think I probably got the mark for it.

But you are allowed to ferry an aircraft with out an elt, or an unserviceable elt, to a place where one may be fitted/fixed, you arent allowed to carry passengers (if i recall correctly)

Yes that's also correct, which adds even further ambiguity to the second answer.

It says "syllabus objectives for which your knowledge deficiencies have been identified are listed. See AC61 for pilot syllabus references". IOt then gives the following "syllabus references":
2. 12.2 (a)
2. 12.2 ©
2. 16.8

What's this all about? I looked at the CAA AC61 but its broken into many different parts and I'm getting confused!

You should have an Advisory Circular stating all you need to know for the exam, which has the numbers with the corresponding information.

They really are bandits with the way some questions are written.

Some of the stupid things that came back to me on the KDRs for PPL was:

-Descibe the clock direction thingy (You know, "Cessna in your 3 o'clock, 5 miles")

The most simple thing ever. The only explanation I can think of for how I got that wrong is that they worded the question stupidly.

Have I said these guys are a bunch of c8nts lately? :P

This was one of my MANY gripes with these ass bandits! For the love of allah, test the prospective pilot on his knowledge of aviation, NOT his f8cking knowledge of the English language!!!!

AND...even when you find errors (I found errors in EVERY SINGLE F*CKING EXAM I SAT) they dont take any notice! I lost count of the times I had to chase these scumbags over the observations I had noted in the exams (which resulted in marks being awarded to me because of their sh1t quality control processes!!!)!!!

A-holes!

There, I feel better now! :D

ASL seems like a pretty stingey operation overall...I mean, for a recount you have to pay them $25 because they couldn't count!

And for a PPL exam...what exactly are they recounting?

For the love of allah, all it is is one person placing a template over your answers and then making sure they can count to 25 (shouldnt be too hard for those inbreeds! :P )

I'm getting a vibe here that you aren't a big fan of ASL mailman.
