By the way, does anyone know why it was moored at Jellico wharf rather than Princes Wharf- most of the liners usually go to Princes', (which is empty in 1st photo kiwiflyboy) and I can't understand why the worlds biggest had to go to a container termainal...

According to the Herald lead in story last week, that's exactly the reason...too big to fit!

Not exactly... its the hull... you see modern Cruise ships are designed with relatively flat-bottomed hulls so they can get into the shallow ports around tropical islands etc. Whereas the Queen Mary 2 is an 'Ocean Liner'... and has the more classic 'V' hull.

The water around Princess Wharf is too shallow, whereas the waters around Jellicoe (and the other cargo wharves Bledisloe and Fergusson) are dredged deeper to allow the cargo ships (also with 'V' hulls) access...

NOTE: I do not claim to be a maritime geek... I am a computer geek... but I was chatting with a guy at after-work drinks on friday night (I work for a container shipping company), who used to work on cruise ships and he was explaining it all to me... coz I asked exactly the same question ;)

Yes that sounds more like it - the profile silhouettes I saw of the QE2 and QM2 aren't vastly different, but Mary draws deeper by 10,000 t.
Love the liner design, cruise ships look like cowpats with frills :ph43r:

An interesting image I found on Wikipedia, comparing the QM2 with the Titanic and an A380:

23L/05R was def in use, you can see a 733 midway on its takeoff run.

Ngauruhoe around 7am, I have some of Ruapehu, but the sun was right above the peak, and didn't come out too well

And at the same time, if I looked to my starboard side I had an unobstructed view to Mt Egmont/Taranaki

I meant that there does not appear to be a big white X or anything marking the runway as U/S...

actually, now that i open my eyes... (and am looking at the pics on my 19" monitor at work) i can see the tiny white X :)

hope my eyesight isnt failing... i have my medical on friday :ph43r:

The illuminated X is there, and there also look to be barricades on one of the taxi-ways. It can be seen in the full size pic, Here is a question for towerguy, why is 23R's threshold displaced so much, and does 23R/05L have its own glideslope with the threshold's being staggered? I know it will have its own localizer (well im 95% sure)
