Yea, they do work with FSX. ;)

I don't know why everyone chooses Sunday, my best night/s by far would be Friday or Saturday.

I've had many troubles trying to get VATSIM up and running with FSX. I think the simple set up of FSX multiplayer is appealing to many. Just login to game spy and your in!!! :)

Well I just spent the last two hours trying to get some enjoyment out of fsx multiplayer, 3 disconections, tried going as atc, aparently there already was atc online, so conected as a 172 and was quite amused to see aircraft taking off and landing from both 34 and 16 at the same time. I tried to speak on the voice coms but got talked over by voices I couldn't even understand. The only thing anyone said on the text coms was "is there atc online" and of course all those detailed aircraft models flying around didn't do wounders for the sims perforamce.

Certainly how can anyone say pressing "ivao, start ivap" and filling a extremly simple flight plan is difficult?!?!?

From the looks of it a tour thingy like you have done sounds a lot better and more organished than 13 aircraft flying around and no one knowing what the hells going on.

Yeah it was a bit chaotic, it's no VATSIM though ;) Remember default MP is usually more of a jump in and fly sorta thing. It was fun overall once you look past the multiple errors and disconnections.

BTW, FSX is CRAP for multiplayer IMO - they stuffed it up by putting gamespy in there. It was better in FS9 for framework.

yeah, sadly with it being so open like that, anyone can join in and fly. even if you have ATC, not everyone has microphones or obeys commands. i suggest in future that the server be passworded, and only trusted NZFF members can have access.

does the microphone work in windows (as in can you open sound recorder and record your own voice?)

Any headset should be fine, although sometimes Windows can be a bit fussy about this, and I've found that if I'm having problems, a restart usually fixes them. ;)

if your microphone isn't working open up control panel and then "sounds and audio devices" and then to the voice tab. And then under voice recording click the volume button, make sure mic is ticked and turned right up ;)

and also enable 'mic boost' under advanced properties

So about this server does the hoster just need to keep his computer on and like sitting as a controler or something?

Great feedback here Jimmy....here's some ideas to tackle these issues

That's alot of disconections.....I played through to the end...no disconections...as did many others...I'm not to techie minded so I can't help you much here.

At the moment its abit all over the show.........but if we can get a good group of mature virtual pilots it will rock......It was great fun, but a long way off the LAX fsx server I've been learning from, which has enough traffic to sink a battleship and it would dwarf our midget litttle NZWN that we ran tonight!!!.

Its is very early days and there are issues that need to be sorted........for those of you that have had little FSX multiplayer time it is to early to judge ...I thought FSX multiplayer was great.........then I found the LAX server and found out that it has the potential to be awesome!!!!

We need to set up the freqs....rather than open mic........pilots need to file flights plans. With a specific freqs set up several controllers can be involved - Ground, tower, approach/departure. This will require more work, patience from the pilots and ATC (Good job for to those of you that did jump into the tower). Some of us may have to do a touch of reading to gain a better understanding of radio chatter etc. This will sort the radio traffic issue.

As for chaos in the skys.......there were many pilots who were still figuring out their mics....some were trying to pick up the 'lingo' and respond to ATC.......and some pilots were intentionaly causing problems.....1 in particular. - Zoltuger hit this issue on the head - we can simply password the server each time.

It was great to see so many people, thanks for turning out, A calm tolerant approach from all of us and a little time to grow is all it will take. :) :D >nzflag< :)

Vatsim can run under FSX using FSINN, which is VATSIM approved software

Interesting views, clearly much thinking has been taking place which is great.

LAST NIGHT

IMO last night was the weirdest session we have ever had for a number of reasons.

1 - We had more people than ever before, so things descended into chaos very quickly.

2 - We had no clear idea of what we were wanting to do, and because it was an open session we had all sorts doing all sorts.

3 - We had newbies who had tech issues, so while we did our best trying to help, it wasn't easy trying to sort tech probs for people from within the FSX chat window.

(A big thanks to Zoltuger, and others, who took the time to try and help nz787 and I believe got him half way by allowing him to at least hear us, even though we couldn't hear him. )

I wanted to have a go as ATC last night, the frustrating thing for me last night was after 5 minutes I realized I was in a plane I didn't want to be in, but as the server host I was stuck so couldn't change over when it was clear we needed a tower, hence I didn't fly. Given the volume of traffic it was interesting simply spotting, but not something I want to repeat.

WHERE WE CAME FROM

FSX multiplayer started for me with the World Tour. IMO it was so much fun, and successful, because we had a clear plan of what we were doing. We knew that we were there to fly to the next destination, and had an end goal.

OUR INTENTION NOW

Build on what we began. Nik is right, its important people don't rush to judgment based on one session, as I said, this was a weird one due to numbers and general disorginisation. It was great to see Monkeybdg, James, Ian, scon etc, I could also hear frustration in some people's voices (and chats), so feel a number of things must happen if we keep going with this. In my view we need to take everyone with us, not leave people behind who have slower aircraft, no voice or performance issues. The challenge is how we do that.

Suggestion - I think Nik, myself and Zoltuger as the multiplayer 'oldies' need to form an NZFF Server team to create a framework to provide this structure (Basic housekeeping rules and flight planning). This way people know whats happening, how the server works and what we expect from each other. I would see this as being quite simple, mostly planning online sessions and communicating this information. This information could include recommended aircraft type, start and end destinations, general overview of what the session is about, weather, who will be ATC for the session and whether shared cockpits are available with perhaps the minimum number to be available, with people free to add more if they wish. Examples could be:

Touring the Marlborough sounds - RB22 / Jetranger - ATC NIK - 2 Shared Cockpits - Real World Weather
Commercial flight NZWN-NZAA Return -A321 / 737 - ATC TIM - 2 Shared Cockpits - Real World Weather
Helicopter tour of white island from Tauranga (Return via Whakatanae) - RB22 / Jetranger - ATC JON - No Shared Cockpit - Slightly Cloudy/Calm
Night instrument flight between New Plymouth and Napier - Cessna 172 - ATC DAVID - All Shared Cockpit - Stormy Conditions
Circuits Wanganui Airport - Cessna 172 / Moonie Bravo / Maule ATC - JAMES - 2 Shared Cockpits

We could canvas those committed to fly regularly on what types of flights they want to do through online polls a week ahead of the next session, and work planning around that. The important thing is mix it up so everyone gets to do what they like, be challenged to try something new and make things a little more professional without being anal.

Well thats enough from me for now, full credit to Nik for getting things going, its up to each of us now to decide where it goes from here.

Nik and Zoltuger, IM me if you think my idea has any merit.
