Auckland for the Weekend

I too had an adventure in Auckland over the weekend, however mine didn't involve the Whenuapai open day, mind you I did hear the F-111 during the afternoon I am sure.

Anyway, I didn't leave my camera at home like the other day at Paraparaumu, a selection of the shots follow...

The busy Saturday morning ramp at NZWN...

Really interesting cloud layers on the climb out, well I found them interesting. Video'd the actual take-off role hence no photos.



Have you ever noticed the rainbow ring around the aircraft when flying close to clouds? I see this every flight, interesting atmospheric effect, or angels protecting us?



Nice vortex on short finals...



And yes, the spoilers work...

Nice vortex on short finals...

I had the vortexes when I flew Qantas AKL-CHC
started on long finals, and kept going until well after we touched town. it was fascinating to watch, maybe it was the same aircraft...?

It's called a glory, and is quite a common diffraction effect. See here

How come I only sees the vortices/whatever on jets, and not on Saabs/dashes/beeches/ATRs/Tecnams

Vapour forms in low pressure.
Jets have generally higher wing loading, higher velocity, hence lower pressure over the wing than props.
ATR should show a bit of vapour I'd have thought.

And conditions also have to be right, high R/H (relative humidity) helps....

No jimmy that isn't an ANZ 777-300, And they dont even know if they are getting 777-300.

The Hydraulic ram only needs to powerful in the 'up' direction (i.e. to be able to force it up against the wind/pressure)

Id imagine the air pressure would force it back down rather quickly though....so you would need to gradually wind off the hydraulic pressure so it didnt slam down.
