That's pretty rough for them. It'd be intersting to know why it overshot though - early stages in the news though I guess.

It seems strange a big well known airline crashing. Usually, its the no name ones that seem to crash. Oh well, maybe its just me.

www.smh.com.au has all the coverage, they had journalists on the aircraft. some of the video footage after the aircraft landed is pretty freaky. some were saying the aircraft shuddered on approach and landed hard, as well as reports of sparks from the nose wheel-well. authorities not ruling out terrorism

Dont you find it funny how air crashes get a disproportionate amount of media coverage?
I mean, 20 something people lost their lives in a crash of an airplane and it gets massive media coverage.....whereas many more people die in, for example, car crashes every day yet that gets little to no coverage.

I had an ex-girlfriend that was terrified of flying. "Ive seen all those 'Air crash investigation' programs" she said.... but yet felt 'safe' driving her car or indeed crossing the road. Statistically, she would have a far far greater chance of dying while doing the latter....

I find it strange.

check out the 'Garuda Accident Record' at the bottom of this story at nzherald.co.nz

They dont sound like a particulary safe airline to me... 14 fatal accidents since 1950... and 7 majors in the last 25 years :blink:

AirNZ has had 1 that I know of... Qantas have had none. Touch wood :ph43r:

depends on your definition of accident- sliding off the runway at bankok and almost writing off a 747, even though it didn't kill anyone, was a pretty serious accident for Qantas.
I seem to remember reading that Air NZ had another accident at auckland airport once, which killed a person, but certainly both airlines have been incident free for decades

yeh we all know the statistics but the fact of the matter is your car is infinitly less sophisticated than a 747 :lol:

it also does not travel in a hostile atmosphere and rely a caste of hundreds to keep it on the road every year

The fact of the mater is car accidents etc happen more often but on the odd occasion a plane falls out of the sky alot more people, families and officials are effected.

AirNZ also had a fatal crash at Auckland Airport in 1966 (4th July), when a DC8 crashed during a training flight. Two of the five onboard were killed.

An Air New Zealand F-27 on a ferry flight ended up in the harbour while on approach to Auckland Int'l many years ago; 2 of 4 people on board died.

what else is incredible is how far he overshot the runway (250m) - they showed an animation on the news, the aircraft left the runway and crossed a road, before eventually stopping in the rice field. apparantly the nosewheel snapped off during landing, that's how hard the aircraft hit the deck
pilot error is being blamed- too fast and 'misjudged' the runway length. i don't buy this explanation, for an airline that regularly flies into a major city like Yogyakarta.
(p.s. the NZ herald claimed it was a 737-300... talk about getting your facts wrong

I have travelled with Guaruda from London via Bali to Auckland (and back) and would not recommend it. We only went with them because they had cheap tickets and all the other airlines were booked up at Christmas. The cabins were messy, food was cr@p, air hostesses were not very helpful, knowledgable or friendly, and there were constant delays at each airport (stopped at Frankfurt and Jakarta along the way)
